Alessio Tacchinardi will be suspended for both legs of Juventus FC's UEFA Champions League quarter-final after his sending-off against Real Madrid CF.

Red cards
Following an off-the-ball incident involving Madrid striker Ronaldo during extra time of the last-16 tie in Turin last Wednesday, both men were shown the red card by German referee Markus Merk. Juve won 2-0 to progress 2-1 on aggregate, meaning Tacchinardi, 29, faces an instant ban in this season's competition while Ronaldo - also suspended for two matches - will be unavailable when Madrid next return to European action.

Held back
UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body said: "In the 114th minute, Tacchinardi held Ronaldo back about 25 metres from the Juventus goal, preventing him taking his position close to the penalty area of Juventus. As a result, Ronaldo kicked Tacchinardi in the legs."

'Unsporting conduct'
UEFA regulations state that as a rule, a player who is sent off is suspended for the next game in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment, and did so in this case, finding Tacchinardi - the instigator - guilty of "gross unsporting conduct". Both players have until midnight on Saturday 19 March to appeal.

lol. I think what Tacchinardi did was really good. Looking at Ronaldo's grin when he was on his way to the changing-room was priceless!!

I think that giving Tacchinardi and Ronaldo the same ban is a joke. Tacchinardi was only holding him back, and he wasn't the last man so it shouldn't even be a red card. Ronaldo's elbow on the other hand was obvious.

In my opinion Merk didn't see what happened and decided to do it 'fair' and give them both a red card.

Since when was "holding back a player" so bad that it was required a straight red and a two match ban?
This is not good. If Balsi gets injuried we'll be stuck with Appiah! He'll surely fvck things up!!!:(

Tacchi handed two-match ban Thursday 17 March, 2005

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alessio Tacchinardi has been ruled out for both legs of Juventus’ Champions’ League quarter-final because of suspension.

The Italian was dismissed in the 2-0 win over Real Madrid which has resulted in a two-game ban.

Tacchinardi was sent-off by German referee Markus Merk during an off-the-ball clash with Ronaldo, who was also red-carded, in the last 16 tie.

"In the 114th minute, Tacchinardi held Ronaldo back about 25 metres from the Juventus goal, preventing him taking his position close to the penalty area of Juventus," UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body said.

"As a result, Ronaldo kicked Tacchinardi in the legs."

The Control and Disciplinary Body have decided to hand Tacchinardi a two-match stop, rather than one, because he was guilty of "gross unsporting conduct".

Juventus will have until March 19 to appeal against the decision. Real Madrid can also do the same as the Brazilian was given an identical suspension.

The draw for the last eight of the Champions’ League will take place on Friday.

UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body said that wad Tacchi did was gross unsporting conduct, so a 2-match ban is handed. And it makes me think, the incident in which Totti stamped on Ramelow was much more serious than that, yet Totti wasn't given any ban. I don't know wad they r thinking nowadays.......

not a big deal unless injuries hit us..knock on wood everyone!!

anyway, i think blasi will come in. if nedved plays, we may see the 4-4-2 deployed again. maybe against liverpool that is okay, even though i think the del piero, zlatan and trez trio was working well.

The thing is having Blasi and Nedved back and Tacc suspended doesnt look like it can damage Juventus.. but you'll never know whats gonna happen or who gets injured in a matter of days from the game... We cant afford any letdowns now, so to me although this news isnt exactly damaging, it can prove to be..

But Pessotto did well to take over against Madrid, should anything go wrong we must place our faith in him like Capello did.
