Spain announce preliminary squad

Spain coach Luis Aragones has named a 27-man preliminary squad ahead of this summer's World Cup finals in Germany.

Aragones has named seven Premiership players, with Liverpool quartet Jose Reina, Fernando Morientes, Luis Garcia and Xabi Alonso all included.

Arsenal pair Jose Antonio Reyes and Cesc Fabregas both get the nod along with Chelsea's Asier del Horno.

There was no room in the squad for Valencia winger Vicente Rodriguez or Espanyol playmaker Ivan De La Pena.

Goalkeepers: Casillas (Real Madrid), Reina (Liverpool), Canizares (Valencia)

Defenders: Capdevila (Deportivo La Coruna), Puyol (Barcelona), Salgado, Ramos (both Real Madrid), Marchena (Valencia), Del Horno (Chelsea), Lopez, Ibanez (both Atletico Madrid), Juanito (Real Betis), Venta (Villarreal)

Midfielders: Albelda, Baraja (both Valencia), Luis Garcia, Xabi Alonso (both Liverpool), Joaquin (Real Betis), Fabregas (Arsenal), Iniesta, Xavi (both Barcelona), Senna (Villarreal).

Forwards: Reyes (Arsenal), Morientes (Liverpool), Villa (Valencia), Torres (Atletico Madrid), Raul (Real Madrid)

Vicente seriously not called up then? That's madness, despite Vicente having had injury woes. Who are they going to field instead, the average Reyes?

I'd be inclined to think so too, but i'm confused with wether that's just the 'get-together squad' or if it is the 'final squad + a few who will be tested'.

It's not going to matter. Spain will underachieve once again ... with 11 players playing together as effectively as 9 once again.

Have to agree. Mostly with Swag though. Poor Spain. Most countries would kill to have a team like that.

That said, I'm not sure about the whole "Spain always underachieve" thing that comes up every two years. Do England to do any better? No, but Spain's the bunch of lazy, inconsistant players with no will to win...

Iniesta's one of the most underrated players in the world. Definitely deserves to go to Germany, and perhaps even start. He's got hell of a competition though.

Actually I would call up Iniesta as well as he has performed well for Barcelona, he also give in a lot for Barce's possible double this season. After all Iniesta has been a consistent performer for Barcelona alongside his teammate Xavi. Regarding the midfield, I don't think Iniesta gets too much of a chance to play

About Vicente, poor chap, injured at the wrong period of time, and it rules him out of the squad.
