If they spent something like 200 millions on Kaka and Ronaldo, they can afford to overpay for Tiago Silva. To beat Barca, Mourinho has to replicate the tactics that he used with Inter in 2010 and for him to be able to do that, he needs a stronger defense.

He can't achieve that by signing a top defender. To build a team as defensively good as Inter was, they have to find a replacement for Ramos too, and also for Marcello. They would need to change the team's mentality, which they won't.

When their fantastic attacking players too keep underperforming against Barca, you'd know the problem is not the defense but a psychological one.

Nothing Real can do will make them better in head-to-heads against Barca. They should be content with winning the league, hope to avoid Barca in the CL and give up on the Copa.

I don't see a problem with Pepe and Carvalho as centre backs, Real Madrid have the problem of being a jittery circus whenever they play Barcelona. Look at the Ramos/Casillas vs Mou argument and how it actually got to the press.
