Great win against Juve Peter S - Host - 1163rd post - 6 Apr 2005 09:47
Morning all,
Just wanted to add my congratulations on what was a top win.
The first-half display was excellent and although tiredness seemed to catch up with a few players after the break, you held on well for the victory.
I thought Carson was outstanding in goal - okay he let Cannavaro's header slip through - but remember his other saves from Del Piero.
But how about the second leg? Juve are yet to concede at home and will provide a formidable test.
Rafa seems pretty confident http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/4414939.stm but do you agree with him?
I reckon you may sneak a 1-1 draw, but it's vital you get the first goal in Turin. [reply] [Complain about this post]

Its only vital we score if they score. We can't go out their and play for a nil nil, but we can certainly settle for that if thats how it turns out.
On last nights game, I thought the team all played well and had Carson not made the save in the first half, the game could have been very different. [reply] [Complain about this post]

I think we will be alright over there. If we play like we did when we went to Leverkusen then I dont foresee too many problems. We have to take the game to them as we have nothing to lose. Sit back and Juve will score, the quality they have on show proves that.
I dont think its vital we get the first goal, just as long as if we did concede we dont let the heads drop. Keep playing the game plan and it should be fine. [reply] [Complain about this post]

Yeah you may be right there but Juve are a different ball game altogether. I cant see the fans being sitting in silence over the game and by that time their injured players will be back. The key would be to score 1 with the few chances that i feel we may create. If we score at least 1, we have a pretty good chance of going through. [reply] [Complain about this post]

Apart from the Carson mistake (who did play excellently overall) we reduced them mainly to shots from range. If we can defend like that in Turin, we'll be in with a chance. We need to make sure we have a bit of possession there so that we can dictate the tempo at times. So long as Alonso is back and looking sharp we should stand a good chance of having a decent amount of ball. [reply] [Complain about this post]

Let's be honest, Juve were going to score last night! Would have been nice to get the third, but it was still a cracking result! [reply] [Complain about this post]

i think rafa has the right to feel confident we are taking a lead into the away leg and i am sure rafa will play a more defencive system, and if u go back a year or two we had 1 of the meanest defences in europe under houlier alot of 1-0 victories our selves so i think a solid performance from us is need like the ones a few seasons ago [reply] [Complain about this post]

Morning Peter, was a great win and an awesome atmosphere - I can still hear "Fields of Anfield Road" ringing in my ears - special.
Away leg will be tricky - I can't see us keeping a clean sheet there (sorry) so we need to score - but we can score against anyone. C'mon!! [reply] [Complain about this post]

I agree with you Hosemi,
You can't be going out there trying to hold out for a 0-0 - if you go at them early, like you did last night, then you'll have a decent chance. [reply] [Complain about this post]

If last night proved anything, it's that form counts for little on the night.
Juve had conceded only 2 goals in over 8 matches in the CL prior to last night.
Some rival fans came on here saying "you'll never beat Buffon".
Well, we beat him twice.
The longer the game stays at 0-0, the more pressure will build on them and the more chance we will have of scoring.
If they do score early, there's still a fair degree of pressure on them to score again, as a late equaliser would take us through.
How can we not have faith in Rafa after last night? [reply] [Complain about this post]

Couldn`t agree more Peter. A great result against top quality opposition. The away leg will be tough, but we know that this team, playing at their best, can score goals, and can defend. Also great to see Alonso close to a return. Things are not looking quite so bad after all the doom and gloom eh? [reply] [Complain about this post]

"well done my Sons".
