Trezeguet: “All behind Deschamps”
After their showing against Vicenza this weekend, the wave of criticism that emerged in some of this morning’s papers signalled a less than positive start to the week for the Bianconeri. Not only did these journalists round on the team’s performance at the Stadio Menti on Saturday, but there were also intimations of a dressing room split, antipathy towards Didier Deschamps and a lack of effort on the field. The articles were also punctuated by a series of claims about the private lives of certain players.
With this in mind, the group decided to have their say at the end of today’s training session, nominating David Trezeguet as spokesman. Here’s what he had to say to Juventus Channel on behalf of the dressing room. “None of us were happy about what appeared in certain newspapers this morning and that’s why I’m here to clear things up. We’re aware that we haven’t been on top of our game lately and that we’re not playing the type of football we’re capable of, but we are still top of the table. That’s why I want to say to all our amazing fans that there’s no need to worry, we need you to stand by us now more than ever. Since August, we’ve all known that our sole objective is to get back into Serie A and to that we need your help”.
It wasn’t so much the criticism for recent performances that provoked the consternation of the team, but the erroneous reports of a dressing room split. “One person wrote that all of us angry, especially with the boss. In actual fact we’re all very much behind him, myself more than anyone seeing as I played alongside him in the national team. My place on the bench on Saturday? I was drained both physically and mentally when I got back on Friday, seeing as I’d just played Argentina, the team closest to my heart. I reiterate that the group is more united than ever and we’re all pulling in the same direction”.
The intrusion into the private lives of certain individuals was just the final straw. Claims on Saturday that Del Piero is soon to be a father were followed up today by reports on the alleged playboy lifestyles of some of the other players. David hit back. “The media can criticise us for our performances on the pitch but no one has the right to bring up our private lives. Everyone of us has a family, many have children and no one should be criticising us for our behaviour off the field. We see it as a huge lack of respect which will no longer be tolerated”.
