How did that happen?:faq2:
When Buffon walked off he pointed to his knee & shoulder just before entering the tunnel. Now the indication could have meant anything - Not necessarily an injury. His substitution might just have been a precautionary measure.

It looked like a precautionary sub to me. I think Buffon could have played on but it wasn't worth the risk.

The Tinkerman does what he is best at and starts with a totally new formation, new tactics and a new approach. We played mostly a 4-5-1 with the two poles Zanetti and Nocerino making the defenders lives easier. The back line was not tested and Buffon hardly did any work. Short and fast passing, throwing the balls behind the defence line and building up the attack was our entire approach. The first half ended with a disallowed goal for Trezeguet but our rhythm showed that we are to hammer them in the second (credit to Dominic)

A great result even though against a very weak team. A game that gave confidence to Legrottaglie who will probably lead our back line until further notice, confidence to Tiago who started his first game and looked sharp as he actually is and a test that succeeded with an A-grade for Molinaro.

Buffon 6: Was not tested

Birindelli 6.5: Solid, good leadership skills and sharp. He helped Salihamidzic a lot.

Legrottaglie 7: Solid without mistakes.

Criscito 7: Same as Legrottaglie.

Molinaro 6.5: Solid with good forward runs. He needs to work on his crossing.

I gave the back wings a lower grade because they are supposed to do work on the flanks up front but they weren't because of the game build up in the middle.

Nocerino 7.5: Solid, excellent coverage and zone marking with sharp passing.

Zanetti 7: Same as Nocerino but the youngster looked a bit more active.

Salihamidzic 7: Worked hard helping the forwards a lot

Tiago 7.5: Tiago at his best. Sharp passing, simple plays that make excellent build ups. I hope he stays in this form.

Palladino 8: The most hardworking player. He would have gotten my MOM award even without his goal. Good job.

Trezeguet 7.5: Trezeguet at his best even though he missed some chances he usually doesn't miss. But Trez is Trez. Need I say more?

Olivera 6.5: He did well but nothing special. A nice shot on target.

Ranieri 7.5: Tinkerman is his name and good tinkering he did today.

I'd say Tiago can do way better too.

BTW I still don't know what's Tinkerman, and why Ranieri is called that. Could u help?

Tiago is picking up and I am sure he will do more with time.

Tinkerman is the nickname he got at his spell in Chelsea because he used to tinker a lot with his formations and tactics. Exactly what he is doing with Juve at the moment.

Ranieri the happy Tinkerman Wednesday 26 September, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Claudio Ranieri went back to his Tinkerman ways and emerged with a 4-0 victory over Reggina and a rediscovered Tiago Mendes. “We have a great team spirit.”

Juventus were stuttering after their 1-0 home defeat to Udinese, but a battling 2-2 draw at Roma on Sunday and tonight’s drubbing of Reggina put them just one point off the leaders.

“We have the right spirit. I made some changes in the formation because I have such a good group of players at my disposal made of people who work hard day after day,” explained the Coach.

“We are taking a little more time to build a team, but the important thing at the moment is that we stay close to the top two.”

Alessandro Del Piero was dropped along with several others, as Tiago finally put in a decent performance when used in central midfield and occasionally pushing up to join the forwards.

“Tiago came in today and played a great game. David Trezeguet never fails to hit the net, while Raffaele Palladino also had his chance to shine. We were not very diligent in the first half, but we raised the tempo and it all became much easier.”

With Sergio Almiron injured during the past two games, will the former Empoli man find himself surplus to requirements when he returns?

“It is not a question I put to myself. The important thing for me is to have all the players at my disposal,” added Ranieri.

“Nicola Legrottaglie is also an important player for us. He has come on as a substitute several times and with Jorge Andrade injured, it was natural to focus on him. The fact he scored a goal is no surprise, we know he’s good in the air.”

Another tough test is on the horizon with this weekend’s Turin derby and the Juve boss refused to give hints over his starting XI.

“I can tell you that Gigi Buffon will play. He only went off today because he felt something strange above the knee, but I am not particularly worried. This is also the first time we have kept a clean sheet this season.”

Ha! and just a few days ago some members in the forum were insulting Ranieri and saying things like "Why is he called the tinkerman? he uses the same players all the time!!"

and now you know why he is called that.
