I'm sure they're pretty intimidated.

I know what they're thinking now. If they don't win this title, their last means squat as well. Mancio already tried to cover himself in by saying last season was just as important as this one. It isn't and everyone knows. Knowing Inter they'll have a very hard season and will choke in an awful lot of games. I don't see them winning the scudetto.
That's exactly the way I see it, they're gonna have enormous pressure on them and no one to blame for that but themselves. Scudetto of honesty and all the crap... Though they will choke I don't see us topping them at the end. They have very strong individuals and a very big squad, they can cope with injuries throughout the whole season. I dread the moment Nedved gets injured, we can't cover for that lack of movement and energy in the midfield.

Even Andrade, our defense is shaky but Andrade seems solid, he's always at the right place and doesn't make unnecessary errors. If we loose him we're back to Boumsong or Legro and we don't need that in Serie A. I seriously hope we snatch Canna or Samuel till the end of the transfer period. If we manage that I see our chances of surprising the whole leauge rise quite a lot.

The Scudetto will go to AC IMO.

@ sateeh; I don't know what Iaquinta meant with the hands after he scored the second goal.

There is normally a surprise result in the opening week, and if I have to pencil in one for prediction, Inter vs Udinese is the one for me; only because I think Udinese has fantastic young players who havent quite made a name for themselves. I hope Asamoah Gyan plays and give Chivu a dream debut.:D.

On Andrade, I agree with everything you said. Andrade is that presence in the backline with his experience and positioning. Criscito, whilst looked good one vs one defender, havent quite impressed me with positioning becaus there were 3 times opposition forward peeled him off to find position in a dangerous position. But I am impressed by the kid, and I think he should play regularly week by week basis. So as shocked as I am to say this, I think getting players like Thuram, who probably cant play every week, but still better than most if fresh, makes a lot of sense to me. Especially he will be available for literally free.

On Trezeguet's finishing that was sublime. His first touch was everything. He set up the ball so that he has option of shooting either way. And instead of blasting one through, he had calmness to just slot it home. And the way opened his shoulder; every kid should take that motion and learn it. GK couldnt guess which way the shot was going until the very last second.

Yeah it could very well be Inter, though Roma won't have it easy in Palermo as well. Of course Inter as the champions will be in the spotlight and I'd love it if they lost a few points in the opening game, and if that happens and if I know Inter it will do "wonders" for their morale in the upcoming matches. ;)

Andrade was definetly a great purchase, right know he's that solid backbone in our defense and he's gonna only get better. However the whole defense needs gelling, there are still some stray movements by our defenders which leave openings for the opposition. When we play a bigger team those openings will be used so we really need to work on that team movement in the back. But it will take time, the back line is the most delicate part of the team exactly because mistakes are rarely forgiven. Because of that I would be thrilled if we got Canna. He knows the leauge, the players, the coaches like the back of his hand. Not to mention he knows Buffon and what he wants in front of him, his knowledge at this time would be invalueable. Mix him up with Andrade and we have a very good central duo which could gel instantly with the experience they have.

Though I was really irritated after DD left and we got Ranieri, he has started to win me over. Mainly because he's not afraid to try out youngsters, he played both Nocerino and Criscito in the first game from the start and I must say it worked well. I was hoping for Tiago to start, because I really believe in him, but hats off to Ranieri for making the choices he made, he got them all right. Cricscito was nervous at times but overall he was solid, he needs playing time definetly, the same as Nocerino, but I don't think bringing Canna would do bad for him. Even though he'd loose a starting shirt, it would do wonders to him to have him as a mentor. We'd give him Coppa matches and some leauge ones and he would be slowly moulded into a great defender. I don't wanna see him, and Nocerino again :p , loaned out anymore, they have the talent and their head seems in the right place. They need a big club, champions around them and they're gonna be big, I have no doubts about that.

What can I say on Trezeguet? I never doubted that man for a second in the whole last season. He has scoring in him, shoots with both feet, unmatched in heading and finishing in general, his first touch is excellent and all you gotta do is give him something to work with. He will in 99% of time deliver what's asked from him. That's why I hate reading posts about him after a game where he doesn't score. People post he was invisible the whole game, nowhere to be seen, etc. That's almost never the case, if he's invisible it's because the team was invisible and balls didn't get through to him. He rarely gets involved in the build up of the play, though yesterday he was really eager to play and was covering a lot more of the pitch. At one point in the second half he was actually in our half and made a a foul. :D He's a luxury to have in attack and we're lucky to have him.

We certainly had everything going right for us yesterday. Deflected goal, livorno penalty waved away, non-penalty awarded, livorno defenders giving the ball away.. We couldn't have faced a better opponent yesterday than this weak livorno side. Having said that all, it WAS a good performance. After some nervous play early on, we pressurised livorno well and controlled the ball and the tempo.

I was getting a little worried in the early stages of the second half, as we seemed to be losing control in a very messy phase; luckily we had luck on our side with that penalty and things completely turned to our favour.

Buffon 6
Steady as always , but wasn't tested much.

Salihamidzic 6.5
I liked what he showed yesterday, good allround performance. He looked more like an actual defender than Andrade, though that isn't saying much..

Andrade 5
Our worst performer of the day. I was worried every time he had the ball, as he kept giving the ball away. Looked very nervous and unsettled, looked very error-prone and unfocused. Needs to improve dramatically.

Criscito 6.5
Solid and he seemed like the experienced defender of the two centre backs.

Chiellini 7.5
Who said this guy can't play? He owned the entire left flank yesterday. He is impossible to shake of the ball, as he powers down the flank. Great threat offensively. He allowed Nedved to play closer to the forwards, as Nedved wasn't as needed on the left. He showed some good skills and he was constantly down the flank up in attack, but he was always back on time to defend. He is also our leader in defence.

Nocerino 6
Solid, lively and got an assist. He was often unmarked on the right and got the ball often, with plenty of room and I couldn't help thinking how much more Camo or Marchionni would have done with so much space.

Almiron 6
He has shown better performances in pre-season. He did not make his presence felt, as he did in the friendlies. Still plays the ball around well though and he did much work defensively.

Zanetti 6
Very solid and does much work defensively and showed some good offensive support at times. I just hope he can get over his tendency to always pick up a yellow card.

Nedved 7
What is there left to say? He still does what he has done for years. Always delivers

Del Piero 6.5
I felt he carried the team in the first half, was lively and showed some great moves. Great assist.

Trezeguet 8
Hattrick-hero. A header, left-footed shot and right-footed backhall; a complete hattrick. Man of the match and to think we were so close to losing him over the summer.

Iaquinta 6.5
We have signed the poor-man's Inzaghi. Dove for a penalty, celebrates like a madman(or rather like an Inzaghi) and scores without knowing anything about it.
His assist was good though.

Tiago
No rating, but I liked what he showed in the short time he was on. Has great technique and showed that he can do some nice things with a ball.

Zebina
No rating

I agree with most of your points Dominic but:

- I thought that Andrade got better during the match. The first 20 minutes he looked very shaky, but after this bad start, he was quite okay. 5.5 is a bit too harsh IMO
- Agree about Chiellini. We have one of the most promising defender prospects in worlds football in our squad.
- I disagree with what you said about Almiron. I thought he was very good in the first half. He is the brain in this midfield and I want him to attack more. Every time, he came near th Livorno box, it turned out to be dangerous. And Tiago was good to yesterday. Actually, he deserves a lot of credit for the Iaquinta ass goal. He ran into the free space to open the way for Nevded who had time to shoot.

Can't wait for the next game!

Whee, 5-1 congrats everyone!

I have to say, I think as the season goes on, Almiron will prove that whatever we paid for him was a bargain.. I think he has it all in him, he dribbles, he's creative, and a great fighter, who can tackle and pressure midfielders too! The perfect CM imo..

Oh, and the Al Jazeera commentator last night was raving about his similarities to veron :D
