My point was that in a non-functional team, with extremely weak midfield, and weak attack, any defense will be exposed and will concede goals. Nesta-Cannavaro wouldn't have changed much, or even anything at all, in this current Juventus.
Bonucci and Chiellini are the only two Juve players who have constantly been proving (the last time, 6 months ago) that they can be an important part of a winning team. The CB position is the very least of our problems.

Bar having Rugani as 4th CB, it is the least of our problems, sure we’ve conceded too many this season but that is more attributed to the horrible protection in front of the back line and how ineffective we are going forward and having meaningful possession which invites the opposition to attack us more often.
Inter have Ranocchia, Milan have played Gabbia and both are no better than Ruru and we see where they are in the table.

It was Bonucci-De Ligt, and Bonucci completely neutralized Lukaku, yes.

Could be true, but still have in my mind when Allegri first invented his 4231 and saved our season. Can't remember which season it really was but we played like shit and couldn't get our mid work until he tried this double pivot with Pjanić and Khedira - something we didn't really see to work as Pjanić was considered to be to weak in defensive phase. It was one little tweak that changed our whole game. We were ofc winning before he invented it, but we couldn't really shine and it led us to CL final.

Yep it's in no way a trivial task to try to determine how big the impact of these changes would be in isolation. There's always so many things going at the same time so trying to pinpoint the main driver for the uptick in performances is borderline impossible. Also I'm sure every season is a bit different in terms of what drives these changes in performances.

Oh I think you can take a balanced view about the effects these formation changes can have on a side. True that we're a lot more clean and precise with the ball now and without the ball players are having more of a crack. I think that this new shape facilitates that better than the last though. Those front four players make for a much more effective press. We're dispossessing our opponents with more than grinta. This formation looks more compact. Players don't look as isolated as they did. If Pellegrini looks like he's about to be beaten, for example, Chiellini's right there to follow up.
And the same goes for passing. It's about more than the players understanding each other's movements. They're just physically closer together. It makes one touch a hell of a lot easier if the ball doesn't need to travel 30 yards half the time.

The player benefiting most from this formation is Kulusevski. Not setting the world on fire but he finally looks comfortable.

That's why this formation actually makes sense. Literally every player is playing in their preferred position. That's quite rare for Allegri but that's part of his appeal as well. Tactically the most versatile coach in Europe.
