I definitely want to see Vidal start and I like him more than Marchisio, but I don't think Claudio was bad at all in the opening 3 rounds. Talking strictly about his duties in midfield. He's done the job very well. He's almost doing the job Gattuso and Ambrosini had to do together in Milan. Against Bologna, especially after Vucinic's red card, he covered so much ground (It sucks that there aren't any stats for serie A about how much did a particular player run during a match) that he couldn't even walk or kick a ball in the last 15 minutes. This takes a lot from his attacking contribution. Still early for talking with any certainty, but I feel that Pirlo would not have been allowed to play the way he did if Marchisio didn't play or if Marchisio's role was less tactical and he was allowed to play more attacking and have more ball possession, which would've made him less invisible. I wonder how will a 4-3-3 work.
