you can not know what he thought, but it could probably be that he actually wanted to quiesce the media by taking the gamble of player players not accustomed to the system against a potential weaker enemy. all the media crap about who will get sold just because they don't play (look at ziegler) could harm the team chemistry and simple minded players (elia) can get unhappy pretty fast and thats probably a thing that was on contes mind to.

if he actually thought that he could win with these players from the start, he could have brought elia and vidal in one of the first games as well, because its not like you could say that they are accustomed to the game after 3 weeks training.

What we learned today: if you make marginal improvements to some positions and play more or less the same shitty players in the positions you should've improved significantly but didn't, the result is pretty much the same. Yawn.

playing elia was a good thing, changing the system was a bad thing

gomez was such a pain in the arse! matri I thought was the wrong striker today, pirlo had several misplaced passes and lacked his usual intelligence, elia's new, vidal like previously mentioned was a hit/miss, marchisio after woeful games did much better today though needs to be careful with the yellows, krasic I thought struggled and was sluggish in the first half but became MoTM in the second, grosso is grosso, chiellini is a clown, Barzagli's our best defender, lichtsteiner good but wasn't as good for his standards, buffon made a coupla good saves, del piero I thought wasn't the right sub but still offered something more however slight, pepe had a significant impact, quag looks unfit.

and I hate catania. 5 previous encounters, 3 draws for us.

I hope that Conte fielded both Elia and Krasic as wingers and threw Vidal in the middle with Pirlo and Claudio
based on his ideas for the team and not influenced by what the fans/papers demand.
Del Neri was a hardheaded bastard ignoring the fans and the papers last season on what he actually needed to change,
