Ok, I realize this happened in 1970, even before I was born, but still, pretty interesting.

England's memorable defeat by Brazil at the 1970 World Cup continued beyond the final whistle, according to the Israeli referee in charge of the match.

Abraham Klein told Israel newspaper Maariv that he allowed play to go on.

He said: "When I blew for time the players didn't hear the whistle and as it was such a great game I let it continue for a few minutes."

Brazil won 1-0 through Jairzinho's goal - but the game is also remembered for Gordon Banks' superb save from Pele.

Klein, one of Israel's most accomplished referees, said he had been honoured to officiate the group match, which was played in searing heat at Guadalajara, Mexico.

He added: "All the officials wanted this game but when I opened the envelope I was stunned.

"At first I thought I was to be a linesman but then it sank in."
