try to push the windows-button on your keyboard and see if maybe the menu pulls up and you're just runnning some shitty resolution maybe... If you see the windows-menu pulling up, well then it's nothing to worry about. right-click on your desktop and change the resolution.
But honestly i believe your problem might be worse. My first guess would be that you EXPLORER.exe is damaged/corrupt, and the only solution i'd have for that would be to throw in the windows-cd or start-up disk and then restart the computer. A menu should pop-up (before windows even loads) in which you can select to "repair" the windows-installation. That should do the trick. If not, i see no other possibility then to format.
If you want to rescue you files first, you could download yourself some ubuntu-distribution and boot that one up from a live-cd. This should give you permission to access your hard-drive and save you files onto some external Hard-Disk or DVD

did u or someone else changed anything in msconfig recently ?

i Think its about EXPLORER.exe that vimo said,
bring Task manager (alt ctrl delet),go to file then New task and type EXPLORER.exe
then press ok.

if it didnt show up,then something is wrong with u r windows,
u can re-inistall it without losing ur important files, just dont choose new inestall. which will fromat ur computer.

other than what's mentioned here, i'd suggest u try restoring ur PC settings to the last known working config. using System Restore. you can do so by logging to XP on Safe Mode. i sure hope u do know how to log onto safe mode!

i treid the explorer.exe. and my documents came up, so the main thing is i can back up my files from this, that is ok, then re format, i just was very afraid i'd lost all my files

u should be able to do it from Explorer, unless explorer is fucked and u cant even open it!

as for Safe mode, keep pressing F8 key a few seconds before you get the Windows XP loading logo. then u can select Safe Mode.

be beware, when i tried System Restore in XP, it further broke my system to the point that i had to format and reinstall it. so dont tell me i didnt warn you.

but the best option now wud be to log onto Ubuntu using the Live cd and accessing your files from there! im sure other Linux enthusiasts will agree with me here!

They are very right when they say that Linux would solve your problems.

In the absence of that, log on in safe mode by hitting F8 before the computer boots, then run msconfig and disable the start up items. Then reboot and see what happens...

I beg to differ. I have run many copies of Windows and was pretty much very successful with all versions. I never had a single crash ever..

If a screwup happens on Linux people would say the same. Its just that Windows has got the biggest share..

I have a Windows desktop for years at home, and I have banged on my MacBook Pro at work a lot more. The crash comparison isn't even close. The PC crashes or freezes up about 10-20x more often.

Granted, the reason for crashes can often come down to the varieties of hardware and the endless array of drivers. Something Macs don't have but Windows PCs do. But the Windows PC I have is a pretty vanilla model from Dell.

Most useful post, a friend of mine had a similar problem and fixed that copying the explorer.exe from me and pasting it to him while in safe mode...
