In the above link there is the following statement:
"- Visit during August when the heat is stifling and many of the shops and museums close."

My friend came across this site while she was arranging her trip (she might be going to milano in August). So is it true that shops close in august? She was interested in doing some shopping there..

Yes. All major cities in Italy are virtually deserted in August. That's when all the Italians (or most of them) have their holidays and escape the cities for some well-deserved rest at the beach resorts. Going to Milan in August is a bad idea because;

1) it wil be virtually empty, and
2) it will be hot

    So it is a bad idea to go shopping in august in Milan.. She won't be so thrilled to hear this news.
    When exactly do shops usually close and reopen again? Is it the whole month of august? More? Less?

    I think Mondays are the best time to go shoppin jack,the malls are not packed,the salesperson can give u their undivided attention & there's a relaxed atmosphere.

    The whole of August is a no-go area if your aim is to go shopping. July? Sure. September (second half just to be sure) is an even better idea.

    And Jeeks is right; Mondays are no good. Many shops don't open on Mondays, or only for a few hours tops.

    It's not just Italy. France too... and other European nations often shut down while many of the public go on lengthy planned holidays.

    She was thinking about going for two weeks. The problem is her vacation is somewhere in august. Septmeber is not good for her.. Last week of July + first week of august?
    Will she have better chances this way?

    thanx.

    Her vacation is apparently at the exact same time that a lot of Italians are on their own vacation. It's hardly a coincidence, I suppose...
