Nobby Stiles died a couple of days ago, he'd been suffering for 10 years with dementia and the effects of a stroke. Now Bobby Charlton has been diagnosed with dementia: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54770216
I make that 5 players of the England '66 squad who have had dementia (Bobby & Jack Charlton, Stiles, Martin Peters, Ray Wilson), and apparently there are others who died with the condition unreported.
The link between dementia and heading the heavy leather footballs in the 60s and 70s (and before then, but this is often the target timeframe) originally arose years ago when ex-WBA legend and England striker Jeff Astle died from the effects of dementia and degenerative brain disease at just 59. Astle was an exceptional and prolific header of the ball and the coroner reported that the numerous minor traumas caused by heading these balls was the cause of his brain degeneration. Since then numerous footballers from this era have died due to dementia caused or accelerated by heading. Even 90s footballers such as Alan Shearer go for testing now to see the damage that can be caused.
