LISBON, May 15 (SW) - Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari unveiled his roster for the 2006 world Cup in Germany. Most notable is the absence of FC Porto forward Ricardo Quaresma.

Quaresma has had an impressive season for his club, with whom he won both the league and the cup. The youngster was expected to go to Germany, but has been selected for the U21 European Championships in his home country.

The team will also be without the injured Jorge Andrade, as well as Wolfsburg's Alex and Sporting Lisbon player João Moutinho.

no Quaresma? I'd like to hear from Felipão why he was left out
U-21s. Which I think is a lame excuse. Quaresma, Fernandes, Moutinho -- they should all be playing. Particularly over the likes of Costinha, who is currently club-less due to his disciplinary problems (at least Manuel Fernandes would be a perfect DM replacement for that block head).

As the rule was in Euro 2004, the veterans with commercial endorsements generally sucked in the tournament. While often the younger players made a big impact.

Maybe it's because younger players can keep their stamina up and heal wounds better than the older guys after 38 brutal weeks of multi-tournament competition? Can't say. But I will bet you young players will prove to be very important in the WC this year.

That's the other thing that irks me. It's not just about seeing Portugal do well. It's also a little about feeling robbed of the opportunity to see someone like Quaresma on the world stage of the WC, showing his talents.

Greg, you think Sérgio Conceição should have been picked? I just read that he has been banned for 3 years (well 4.5 months depending on good behavior or what ever) because he spat in the face of a player and then pushed his shirt in the face of the referee with his fist.

btw he was voted Belgium's Player of the Year for 2005.

There's a theory that Big Phil likes his family, and if you aren't in the family, you're viewing it from the outside. His choices mirror the Euro 2004 team, which is both bad and good. Sérgio likely wasn't going to make the cut given how long it's been since his last call-up.

That Portugal is going to rely on Figo and C Ronaldo on the wings isn't a bad thing ... though they really need Quaresma as another creative option. Sérgio would have been another good creative option (I don't think the forwards of Pauleta, Nuno Gomes, and super-sub Helder Postiga will cut it in the end). But I would have preferred to see Quaresma, or Moutinho, and most definitely Manuel Fernandes in over clubless Costinha before they called up Conceição.

Portugal will be Portugal and choke once again. At least that is what I'm hoping for. This time around the tournament is not being played in their nation and they will not have the entire crowd behind them thus giving them any advantage.

Portugal has a likelihood of choking, even if their group is pretty favorable.

However, Portugal's U-21 squad is going to give Italy's a run for their money next week: Quaresma, Fernandes, and Moutinho (holy crap! all three should be in the WC) and Meireles at midfield. Still, that seems like a lame priority from an NT standpoint.

    No Rui Costa?
Well, he didn't play to much in Milan, anyway for me he would be a very productive player in Portugal squad
    Why Costinha "no team"?
