I got the inspiration for this from the (closed) thread about Obafemi Martins date of birth.

Even with the incredible media focus on football some players still manage to lie about their passport, date of birth, or idendity. Some examples:

- Inter signed a guy from Chievo in 2003/2004, a right winger by the name of Luciano, age 29. However, when he first joined Chievo he claimed to be 22!

- When Dida first joined Milan he claimed to have a EU passport because he had Italian ancestors...which he in fact hadn't. He eventually got banned for a year.

Does anyone know any others?

And he went under the name Eriberto before he was caught too.

Luciano was just plain stupid. Imagine if he had kept it up. When he would claim to be 32 in reality he would be 39.

I don't know. Some newspaper had the story at some point, but they have no evidence that he's actually 28. What was proven is that his birth certificate IS false, but that doesn't mean that his age is different.

Well there's only so many reasons you will fake a birth certificate for. The most common type of birth certificate holds the following information:

    1. Your name
    2. Your date of birth
    3. Your place of birth (and thereby indirectly your nationality)
    4. The name of your mother
    5. The name of your father

So either he didn't like his name (I doubt it, you can change your name without faking your birth certificate), he wanted to ditch his nationality for migratory/political reasons (clearly not, who would pick Nigerian), he didn't like his parents (unlikely reason to change your birth certificate for), OR .... *drumroll* he didn't appreciate his real age.

He's Nigerian: and that's all the information you need in a thread discussing players that lied about their age.

The Feyenoord academy here are having the same problem as kids fake their birth certificates in order to earn a move to Holland. Its a more common problem than expected.
