Look, the whole purpose of national teams is to have players who are from the said nation and have supporters who are from the said nation. What is the point of this tournament if everybody is going to be supporting different nations than the one they're from? It doesn't make any sense and defeats the whole purpose of the event.

Scenario: Turkey vs. Italy in the Euros

Out of this long list maybe two are Italians.

I was looking at that list the other day and thought it was pretty annoying as well.

Although, it must be said that Sarah's got family heritage in Italy and has spent some time there. I think she has citizenship, too, if I'm not mistaken. So she's cool.

Must one be Italian to support the Azzurri? I am not setting any rules here, you go support whoever you want for all I care but I ain't supporting a country that is not mine. At the same time when I don't like the fact that there are many Turkish, Lebanese, Iranian, etc. Azzurri fan boys, I will do my best to provoke and I have all the right to do that as this forum is not an Azzurri forum.

I am only supporting Italy because I have bet on them to win.

I would never consider myself an Azzurri fan and, unlike many, I actually go and watch my own national side play.

On the other hand I love Italy for many reasons, more important is my grandparents have borned there...

For those that dont like that the forum has become Azzurro... I think is totally logical that people that usually support Juve support Italy too since many Juve players and Juve legends plays there and have done History with the national team. Juve is the team that has provided more players to Italy, and more world champions.
Juve has always been important for the national team, and is logical that as Juve fans they support Juve guys playing there

I totally agree, I share the same thing but I actually have a local team that I cheer for in Lebanon and when I lived there I used to go to all their matches but the league is not professional, almost all the players have another job aside their football team. My team even used to get the jerseys of Saint Etienne's previous season, so you can imagine how low the football level we are talking about is. But when it comes to country it is a total different story.

They're not cheering for ANY team, they're cheering for ITALIA, greatest team in the world!!

By the way, there are only 16 teams playing in the EURO, so alot of people won't have their country present to cheer for. Everybody picks a favorite tho. Seems only natural that Juve supporters would lean towards Italy in that case.

I can tell you what happened when Uruguay played against Italy in the 90 World Cup... I was 9, my cousin 12... we were both crying because Uruguay had lost and my grandmother was doing peperonatta in the kitchen to celebrate Italy´s victory while my grandfather was singing some traditional italian song

Having roots like that is impossible not to become attached with Italy s traditions and of course calcio is one of it

But totally understand your concern about people in your country supporting Italy instead of their nationals team. In any case I think if Lebanon has a very good national team that will probably dont happen. And I dont think none of them feel it as an italian does.
On other hand globalization has done a great impact in what we used to call nationality... Is a deep debate ...

Everybody has a national team but not everybody has their own league. Don't confuse club with country.

I wanted them to do good but I wasn't supporting them in any way.

I don't know what is the difference between the two exactly (I see it the same way), same things can be said about me I guess, I didn't watch any of Italy's qualifying games, I just watch them on tournaments, I love watching them on tournaments and always want them to win, and it sucks for me to see them lose. Well you name the category I belong (Supporter or "like to see them do good"?).

Deny as much as you want, in the end, Juventus is an Italian team, they represent Torino (the city) in Italy, and Italians when they play in Europe, you see the Italian flags on the stands and all, you see the Italian flag on the shirt, if you are nationalist, then that must annoy anyone who is so..

But only because your team, whoever that may be, failed to qualify or isn't part of Europe doesn't mean that you should try to anger people by questioning their nationality or their right to support the team they like most, especially when you don't know shit about them.

Yeah, I know we're not talking politics here, because we're talking about international football. And nationalism with sport, something that doesn't hurt anybody and is truly competitive, is not a bad thing. That's why we have the World Cup, the Euros, and the Olympics etc.

My country the US hasn't done anything in the football world, being one of the "worst" in some people's mind not only because of politics. Why didn't I stick with the Azzurri after I saw them play here in the States in 1994? I mean, surely the US is one of the worst World Cup competing nations...

But you don't see me supporting anybody else. Why? Because it defeats the whole purpose of the thing and is just... stupid.

If we want to kick nationalism out of sport, then we have to rid ourselves of these ugly competitions such as the World Cup.
