I don't think Italy's formation is a mystery anymore. It's pretty obvious this is how Donadoni will be playing.

--------------Buffon----------------------------

----Zambrotta----------Barzagli-------Matrix----------Grosso----

--------------De Rossi----------Pirlo----------Gatusso-------------

---------Camoranesi---------------------------------Di Natale--------------

----------------------------Toni---------------------------------

I think this formation is probably the best one possible except I think Chiellini should start as he could offer a lot more than Barzagli.

Del piero will only start if Ranieri decides to play a 4-4-2. I think he and Cassano will mostly come in as subs for Camo and Di Natale at some point in the game.

Cannavaro's injury is a huge blow, no one can lead the team the way he does.
Matrix has been a joke all season for Inter, as Alex undressed him so many times in their last meeting....no way Matrix should get a start

I'm off to Switzerland in a few hours to go see the Azzurri for the Euro's. I'm so excited. See ya guys in two months since I'll be enjoying the rest of Europe after the Euro's :p.
have fun, be safe, and take lots of pictures...and post them here !! ;)

Excellent to see Cannavaro on crotches. Such a good news for the Azzurri fanboys.
Hopefully it will be very long.
dont you give people warnings for trolling, Jack ??

i jsut read Del Piero is captain of italy!
not if he doesnt start....

Gianluigi Buffon
Given an intensive workout and looked particularly shattered after his second stint of goalkeeping exercises.

Christian Panucci
Took a knock to the right knee in training and left early as a precaution. Is awaiting scan results.

Fabio Grosso
Very good in training, is a strong contender for the left-back berth ahead of Gianluca Zambrotta.

Giorgio Chiellini
Solid in training, albeit physical again. Gattuso was left reeling after another hard challenge from the Juventus defender.

Alessandro Gamberini
Integrated very well with the side, played well in the practice match.

Andrea Barzagli
Looks certain to start and played with the pink first-team bibs in both halves of the practice match.

Alessandro Del Piero
Has been made captain in the absence of Fabio Cannavaro but may have to settle for a cameo role against the Netherland

Gennaro Gattuso
Usual committed self in training but yet to show his best form.

Luca Toni
Will be a certain starter regardless of the formation. Gave a decent showing in training.

Daniele De Rossi
Yet to shine in the Azzurri camp. Played the second half of the practice match with the first team.

Antonio Di Natale
Lively and bright. Looks likely to start on the current run of things.

Marco Borriello
Scored a fine goal in the practice match and his finishing could find him a substitute's role if Italy are in trouble in their opening match.

Massimo Ambrosini
Like yesterday, scored another fine goal in the practice match. Could well displace Andrea Pirlo on current form.

Marco Amelia
Played in the practice match. Did little wrong.

Fabio Quagliarella
Not as strong a performance as yesterday but set up several chances for his team-mates in training.

Mauro Camoranesi
Off key at present, looks lethargic in training and may lose his place to Cassano.

Morgan De Sanctis
Was given one-on-one training with his coaches, didn't play in the practice match.

Antonio Cassano
Played very well and is looking as though he may be winning over Donadoni for a place in a 4-3-3 against the Netherlands.

Gianluca Zambrotta
Battled hard in training but Cassano outshone AC Milan's new signing. May play if Panucci fails to recover from his knee injury.

Simone Perrotta
Is trying hard but looks likely to miss out on the opening day as he didn't start with the first team.

Andrea Pirlo
Not playing at his best and was relegated to the second team in the practice match. May lose out to Ambrosini against the Netherlands.

Alberto Aquilani
Playing well enough but not in the first-team reckoning it seems.

Marco Materazzi
Looks as though he has won the race for Cannavaro's place at centre-back alongside Barzagli

Okay if Ambrosini starts and not Pirlo we may as well just forfeit.

I dont know why but i have a sneaky feeling that DP might start vs Holland.
Come on Sally, not as if DP starting against Holland is something illegal :D

I expected Cassano and Di Natale to partner Toni up front, but I'm wondering who will be the 2 center backs for the game. It is a good thing both Robben and Sneijder are injured, but I'm sure Matrix is capable of handling van Persie.

If Pirlo continues to play like this, I guess Donadoni may have to switch players + formation.

I would play De Rossi instead of Pirlo if he is in such bad form. De Rossi is the only person in the team that can distribute the ball half as good as Pirlo.

Chiellini seems keen on injuring half of the players in the Italian squad. I don't know why he's taking training so seriously. There is a positive to be extracted from that however. He does seem very enthusiastc and excited, I think starting him would be a good move since he is probably the only player in the Euros that is determined to play every game as if it were his last.

I don't expect too many surprises although I have a feeling Cassano will get a first team place somehow.

Both Cassano and Del Piero can't play unless Camoranesi is somehow fielded as a right fullback and Di Natale is benched despite his two goals against Belgium. Either way it would seriously disrupt team harmony and Donadoni would be a fool for even considering it.

The thing which bothers me about De Rossi is he is reckless. I hope he keeps his head and don't do anything stupid which will cost the time.

Chiellini? Maybe he is excited in playing in such a big tournament for the 1st time. I know he is young, but he should keep his head as well. Not sure about starting him.

Okay if Ambrosini starts and not Pirlo we may as well just forfeit.
It would be really foolish to start Ambrosini ahead of him. There would hardly come any creativity from midfield. Even when Pirlo is not in his best form he's able to decide a game with one defense-splitting pass. Something I can't exactly see Ambrosini doing. Besides Pirlo played pretty well in the last friendly against Belgium.

Ambrosini is also very creative, he showed this in Milans last champions league triumph with some quality assists. Although i do agree that De Rossi should get the nod ahead of him.

Donadoni Chooses De Rossi Over Ambrosini

According to reports in Italy, Roberto Donadoni has chosen his team for tomorrow’s opening Euro 2008 match against Holland.

The Azzurri open up their Euros campaign with a tough match in Berne against the Dutch of Marco Van Basten.

The Italian newspapers are doing their usual second guessing before the match as they try to work out the team that Donadoni will employ.

According to the latest reports in Italy, Donadoni will go with a 4-1-4-1 formation, and the two main talking points are in the centre of defence and midfield.

Roma’s Daniele De Rossi has purportedly been preferred to Milan’s Massimo Ambrsoini, and will play the anchor role in front of the defence.

Meanwhile, following Arjen Robben’s injury yesterday, Donadoni has realised that pace is not such an important entity in defence, and has decided to partner Marco Materazzi with Andrea Barzagli in the centre, with Gianluca Zambrotta on the right and Fabio Grosso on the left.

Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso make up the other central midfield positions, while there is the flexible forward trident of Antonio Di Natale, Mauro Camoranesi and Luca Toni, which will allow Italy to employ three, four, or five in midfield depending on the situation.

looks like Buffon will certainly be handed the captains armband, with Del Piero possibly coming on a sub sometime during the game..

Are you a fan of any national side? Are you a football fan at all?
Unlike you I support ONLY my HOME country when it comes to international football. In other words I'm not a fanboy. Am I football fan? Much more than you at least.

dont you give people warnings for trolling, Jack ??
Trolling? This is a Juventus fans forum and I don't go trolling on Juve or its players. So there is no need for warnings here. And for the matter, I haven't issued a warning in ages because I am fed up of hearing complains from people like you. And to end the whole thing for now, tomorrow I will be wearing ORANGE!!!

Oh please. I like Italian football, I like a lot of Italian players and I've been living in Italy for a couple of months. If that's not enough to be allowed to support Italy when Belgium isn't even playing, that's just bollocks. I support only the Azzurri this tournament, just as I support only Juve.
