I only saw the 2nd half, but there were no warriors out there. Chiellini and De Rossi are the type the team needs. But coaches don't usually mix around the defence, so chances are we are going to see the same defnce in the next game.

That was horrible. I couldn't believe he missed that.

It was bad, but he has shown better and will be better. If I'm the coach, I'm going with Del Piero and Toni up top. I'm throwing Gamberini in with Barzagli, or scrapping the entire back line and going with Gamerini and Cheilini and two of either Panucci, Zambro and Grosso. In the midfield I'm thinking Pirlo, De Rossi with Camo and Di Natale out wide.

Simple 4-4-2. Concentrate on possession and feeding crosses into Toni while DP does what he wants so long as he stays between De Rossi and Toni. Honestly, this group could be worse. Romania doesn't offer much offensively and I don't fear France too much because like the announcer said earlies Anelka is not good. Just take things half by half and next thing you know its the Quarters.

Trez gets a few seconds of ball time a match. He scores, we celebrate. He flubs, he gets flamed.

Toni had more than enough touches and did little with them. The best was towards the end when he toe-kicked back an assist with his back to the goal. But can you think of one decent save he actually forced out of van der Sar the entire match?

And first thing that came to my mind when I wrote what I worte about Toni was Trez. I know he wasn't good, but still even with no single dangereus shot I consider him more of a threat and useful player than Ambrosini and Gattuso were. If I remember correcrtly, Toni recieved only one or two ballas in the box, all of the other were 30m from the goal, and everyone knows that Toni is pretty useless there, so that's why I think he don't deserve to bashed so much unlike players like Gattuso and Ambrosini.

After i saw the lineup, what happened onwards never really surprised me.

From the day i heard the news about canna injury, i was thinking of gamberini-chiellini duo from start. And today it was proved. Matrix has had a supbar season and barzagli is a average player (ffs donadoni, isnt the fact that his going to play for wolfsburg good enough clue?)

I fail to understand the point of starting with panucci as well, but his not as bad as the central dup, but grosso always gives a lot more, especially when it comes to attacking play, and if you are going with 3dms lineup, you should have better attacking fullbacks. But Donadoni doesnt know it.

I just cant believe Donadoni thinks italys best lineup to go with was what we saw today? Are matrix and barzagli better than chiellini who has been one of the leaders for juve, especially in defence, and gamberini for viola the same.

Is ambrosini better than De rossi?

I think a plain 4-4-2 with the right players would have been enough to get atleast a draw.

For some reason i think Donadoni wont make as many changes as i (and others) expect. Its the old italian mentality, he thought zambro--barzagli--matrix--panucci defence was the starting XI defence. Surely he wont make 3 changes to the 4 defenders who where supposed to be the starting MATERIAL for Italy.

I surely haven't given up on Toni, it's just that you expect a player like him to finish these chances.

I think he's going to have to make a change, as Materazzi was not fit enough to play the whole game, and when he came off I believe he was icing his knee. If that's the case, he should not start. Simple as that.

First goal was offside, not because of the reasons any of you posted, but because of the fact that Panucci was lying on the ground injured, not standing at the line waiting to get back into action. Since he was clearly not in any position in come back onto the pitch at any moment (lying with his face down), he cannot be considered in play.

The rules say something about not standng and going out against your own will (such as rolling out when injured), but it is always a matter of how you judge the specific situation.

Nonetheless, Italy wasn't THAT bad. You have to keep in mind that we probably saw the best team in this tournament in Holland, and given the circumstances I dont think it was the worst performance ever from Italy. But we clearly need to improve.

This has got to be the worst performance I've ever seen in my life from Italy. What a shame, what a clueless game. I will tell you what was wrong in my opinion.

The Formation
The back four was a real big drama. Knowing that the Netherlands have fast creative players like Sneijder, van der Vaart, Kuyt and even Van Nistelrooy, Donadoni plays with Panucci (35). I don't know in what year Donadoni lives, but Panucci can't compete with fast players like the Dutch attackers. He's slow and old, he doesn't add any value to the team (yes maybe experience, but haven't we got already of that?).
Playing Barzagli was the biggest mistake he ever made. Donadoni MUST be playing too much Football Manager, Barzagli just sucks. I can't say nothing about Materazzi because he was a joke today, although I would keep him at the back line. Zambrotta's days on the left wing are over. He lost some of his speed and give this man a fucking role, LEFT or RIGHT. Don't switch him constantly, he's not 20 years old.

Here it comes, the midfield. This was probably the worst midfield formation he could have made. Ambrossini WHO?! He plays an AC Milan midfield. Just don't get me started about AC Milan's season and why they bought Flamini. Camoranesi on the right is cool, but give the man a fvcking free role will ya? He's been dominating Italy the whole season or something?. Doesn't Donadoni watch Serie A or something?

Attack. I don't think I have to say that EVERY CLEVER THINKING man would play Del Piero. Ofcourse Di Natale is good, but he is NOT Capocannoniere, and probably the best Italian striker of the season. And than changing Del Piero for Di Natale doesn't really add anything when you're behind with 2 goals. Toni was a ghost, I hope he realizes that. When the ball was in attack, there was no midfield to support them

The Next Game
This is what has to be done. Play Grosso on the left side, and give him the free role to run across the pitch. The only reason that he failed at Inter is the fact that Inter is the most ugly club at the world and he was limited in his attacking ability. Central defenders should be Chiellini and Materazzi. No doubt about it, Chiellini is THE talent from Italy, not Barzagli (who?). On the right side it should be Zambrotta, with limited attacking options because on the right side of the midfield there should be Camoranesi. He needs a free role and walk wherever he likes to (just like he does at Juve). The other midfield roles should be Pirlo, maybe Gattuso or De Rossi. I'd try De Rossi first because he is hungry for such a tournament. On the left attacking side it should be DEL PIERO. Capocannoniere has surely prooved his worth and Donadoni is an idiot for not picking him. Central Toni, on the right it should be either Cassano or Di Natale.

They have the weakest defence in the whole Euro's. How can you say such a thing? We looked like a Serie B team who were playing the champions of Serie A. It's all thanks to Donadoni's tactics, I don't blame the players. There is only one king, Lippi
