Borriello gets Azzurri nod

Roberto Donadoni includes Marco Borriello in the squad for Italy’s friendly against Portugal, but leaves Antonio Cassano and Alex Del Piero at home.

There had been rumours that Genoa hitman Borriello would receive his first senior call-up after netting his 12th Serie A goal this afternoon.

As this is a friendly, Donadoni is trying to test out various different alternatives to his main squad, while Gianluigi Buffon and Gennaro Gattuso are injured.

It was thought that it was the perfect opportunity to see Cassano and Del Piero back in the Nazionale following their strong form for Sampdoria and Juventus respectively, but they have once again been overlooked.

Other returning figures are Marco Materazzi, former Udinese goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis, Fiorentina’s Franco Semioli, Marco Cassetti and Alberto Aquilani of Roma.

The Azzurri will come together at the Stadio Meazza in Milan for training on Monday afternoon and fly to Zurich for Wednesday’s match at the Letzigrund Stadium.

Italy take on Portugal at 19.45 UK time and the referee will be Sascha Kever of Switzerland.

Italy squad
Goalkeepers: Amelia (Livorno), De Sanctis (Sevilla)
Defenders: Barzagli (Palermo), Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Cassetti (Roma), Grosso (Lyon), Materazzi (Inter), Oddo (Milan), Zambrotta (Barcelona)
Midfielders: Ambrosini (Milan), Aquilani (Roma), De Rossi (Roma), Perrotta (Roma), Pirlo (Milan), Semioli (Fiorentina)
Forwards: Borriello (Genoa), Di Natale (Udinese), Palladino (Juventus), Quagliarella (Udinese), Toni (Bayern Munich).

Palladino is in there because he played for him at Livorno.

Del Piero more or less cooked his own goose when he said he would not play as a right sided midfielder cos Donadoni like most disciples of sacchi are people that keep malice.

Aquilani has not played much and he calls him up as for Semioli well no comment

It's a friendly, folks. Not to defend Donadoni, but if there's a time to make creative call-ups to try some things out of the ordinary squad, now is it.

to be honest, i feel sorry for Palla, Twatanieri constantly plays him on the wing when he is best as a trequartista or striker. as for Alex, that man is a serious idiot. also why is Zanetti not been called up, he has been excellent this season better than Semioli.

Zanetti said he doesn't want to play for the NT, he wants to focus on Juventus.

well he just brings in players that suit his system and that only. Alex was cooked because he is not as efficient when playing the 433 and the same goes to cassano.

inflexibility will not be to his benefit and if he wants to continue limiting his options than it will be very hard for him to succeed.

Sure its a friendly, but with the Euros around the corner you expect him to call up quality players, not sub standard ones. Both Cassano and Del Piero should have been called up.Donadoni might have some issues with Del Piero, but not calling up Cassano, who has been one of the best players in the league off late,is pretty stupid.
