Italy suffer Barzagli blow Thursday 19 June, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Andrea Barzagli’s Euro 2008 is over after the defender suffered a serious knee injury.

The loss of Barzagli is a further blow to Roberto Donadoni, who has already lost captain Fabio Cannavaro to injury.

Barzagli sustained damage to his left knee during training on Thursday and Azzurri doctor Andrea Ferretti has found that there is damage the meniscus in the knee.

The Wolfsburg new boy won’t be able to play any further part at Euro 2008 and will require an operation within the next few days.

Like Cannavaro, Barzagli has expressed his desire to stay with the Italy squad in spite of his inactivity and may have the surgery in Austria.

how much longer do we have to stick to a tactic of feeding goalless Toni the ball? Really. Not capitalizing on chances is one of those things that could fek you up in a game. I don't know how long Don is planning to be patient with Toni. It's a knockout stage now, and we can't afford mistakes. To be fair Toni I really do think he's just unlucky. But the whole team can't wait for his luck to come around. Plus our defence is absolute crap and Spain's attack should be able to toy with them easily .... which makes scoring for the Azzurri all the more important.

And Barzagli's injury is no big loss but I hate to see players injured anyways, unless they play for Inter.

Giorgio is starting to build a serial defender killer reputation :D

Our defence has gotten better with chiellini and panuci at cb. I dont think its as bad as people are making it seem.

It's slightly improved than the horrendous one vs Holland, but IMO it's still bad, not the kind that's going to win Euro. Of course I would love to be wrong about this though. I just hope they'll really step up their game vs Spain.

Why are people so happy for Barzagli getting an injury ?

Weren't some of these same people arguing with me and few others in the last year, claiming how we're fools who don't know football and don't know that Barzagli is the next great defender Italy produced ?

Nah Barzagli is up and coming, but he had a bad season and is totally out of form. Add a first tournament game against a team like Holland and there you go. Materazzi is out for god I think, time for him to retire gracefully.

Edit: Actually he should've retired from the NT two ears ago.

Del Piero On Fire In Training
Alessandro Del Piero is pushing for a starting place against Spain on Sunday after impressing hugely in training, while Andrea Barzagli limped out with an injury.

Del Piero did not feature at all during Tuesday’s 2-0 win over France that booked Italy’s place in the quarter finals of Euro 2008.

The Golden Boy impressed as a substitute during the 3-0 defeat to Holland, but was disappointing after starting the 1-1 draw against Romania.

The Italy squad resumed training today after being given yesterday off, and Del Piero was the star performer during a mini-game between ranks.

The Juventus captain scored a hat-trick and looked in peak condition. Antonio Di Natale also impressed, scoring four times.

However there was some bad news for the Azzurri as Andrea Barzagli was forced to pull out of the session with injury, limping off the pitch before receiving treatment from medical staff.

Barzagli was not expected to start against Spain anyway, as the two centre backs are almost certain to once again be Christian Panucci and Giorgio Chiellini.

How is barzagli getting injured a good thing? We have already established that Killo and Panucci are the starting pair. All this means is that we have one less option should soemthing happen to our CBs.

The stupid American yes.
With his 22 years he acts even more stupid than my nephew from 6 years old.
Eventually he will defend himself by saying he goes to university and he's actualy very smart bla bla bla.

The biggest hypocrite together with that Bayern idiot.
How could you not hate Americans when they present theirselfs like this?
Ohh give me a fucking break.

Was this clown warned for this?

PS - That rap group as your name is crap. Listen to better hip hop.

Barzagli won't be a huge loss, not because of the fact he's a poor player, but rather the fact that we'll probaly only have one further game in this tournament. Unless that is, the Spanish bottle it again.
