I have a lot of time for McLeish but he needs to let this one go.

The officials were poor, but they did not cost Scotland the game. If anything Scotland got the better of the big decidsions.
i agree that the officials were poor, they got 3 big decisions wrong!! but i dont know how on earth you could ever give that last minute free kick for Italy. I don't even know what you could say the foul was for.It looked like a clear foul on Hutton. Just bizzare!

But credit to Italy they did everything perfectly, they took advantage of a very nervous looking Scotland team in the first ten minites. Scotland just looked like the occasion was getting to them at the start and had a woeful loss in concentration for Toni's goal. Its hard enough to beat Italy without giving them a 1-0 headstart!

I think McLeish will be leaving the national team for the EPL, which will be a big shame because he has done well for us.

I've watched it again a few times today and I still don't understand why the ref awarded the foul in our favour . I can see why Scots fans would be very upset. It's true to say the 2 other big decisions went Scotland's way, but this decision was the easiest to get right. It was baffling!

Iaquinta: We deserve Euro 2008

Vincenzo Iaquinta insists Italy thoroughly deserve to be at Euro 2008 and can add this title to their World Cup medals.

“The important thing was getting through the qualifying round. After all the victories we notched up, it would have been unjust to be left at home,” said the Juventus striker.

The Azzurri drew their opening tie with Lithuania and lost 3-1 in France, but those and the 0-0 with Les Bleus at San Siro were the only points they dropped.

Qualification was sealed in Saturday’s 2-1 win in Scotland, secured by Luca Toni and Christian Panucci.

“We did well to get off to such a strong start with Toni. There was a reaction from the Scots, but we never wavered,” added Iaquinta.

“Finally we have the ticket in our hands for Austria and Switzerland. After conquering the World Cup I think we can aim for the European Championship as well, seeing as this is a very strong squad and can still improve.

“Let us not get ahead of ourselves, though. We should take the time to enjoy this exceptional result that we wanted so much in this difficult time for Italian football.”

The final qualifier is at Modena’s Stadio Braglia against the Faroe Islands on Wednesday evening. A victory will ensure first place in Group B regardless of France’s result in Ukraine.

As Iaquinta was only a substitute in Glasgow, it is likely he will start in that tie alongside debutant Raffaele Palladino, his Juve teammate who has made the step up from the Under-21 squad.

Buffon bets on Italy 'Double'

Gianluigi Buffon is willing to bet on world champions Italy’s chances of winning the European Championships next summer.

“Now there are quite a few months to go before the finals. The minimum objective is to get past the first round, but then we’ll see what happens,” said the goalkeeper.

“I am ready to bet on this squad, as it has everything needed to continue surprising everyone on the main stage.”

The Azzurri booked their passage to Austria and Switzerland thanks to Saturday’s 2-1 victory in Scotland.

The Scots have been highly critical of referee Mejuto Gonzalez and his assistants, but Buffon insists if anyone has cause for complaint it’s Italy.

“We deserved this success, obviously. One would be foolish to suggest otherwise. In the second half we were under pressure and that was inevitable, seeing as Scotland had to win at all costs.

“In my view we deserved to seal up the win in the first half, as Antonio Di Natale’s goal should not have been disallowed and the Scottish equaliser was offside. Never mind, we are accustomed to suffering and difficult situations don’t frighten us.”

The players have all made a point of dedicating this win to Coach Roberto Donadoni, who was constantly on the verge of dismissal since the moment he took over.

“We are happy for him and he deserved this great achievement. They tell me he got very emotional in the locker room, but I did not see that,” continued Buffon.

“It was not easy to replace Marcello Lippi, but he took full responsibility. He convinced us because he is a great Coach and a consistent man who knows how to make the right decisions at the right time.

“He certainly worked well both for the present and the future. Continuing this way we can have some more wonderful moments in Austria and Switzerland, considering how much we have improved over the past year.”

Domenech: I Don't Like Panucci

France Coach Raymond Domenech has added to his long-list of insults against Italy by admitting that he doesn't like Christian Panucci.

Panucci headed home a stoppage time winner against Scotland yesterday to send both Italy and France through to the finals of Euro 2008.

Domenech was asked earlier today if he was thankful to Panucci for scoring the goal that clinched qualification for Les Bleus.

"I don't like Panucci much but I thank him anyway," sniped Domenech. "Italy's result doesn't bother me as we are preparing for our game with Ukraine on Wednesday."

Domenech and Panucci have a bitter history and in 2001 the French boss unleashed a stinging critique of the Azzurri star, while he was playing for Monaco.

"This guy possesses all the flaws you can find in football," Domenech said.

"He is the biggest cheat I've ever known.

"I've seen some troublemakers among Italian defenders but never like him.

"Time-wasting, shirt-pulling, tackles from behind - he's a real wind-up merchant."

It remains to be seen what Italy make of Domenech's latest comments but the 56-year-old is certainly getting under Rino Gattuso's skin.

“Raymond Domenech is always being such a pain and he really did not deserve to reach the finals," said the Milan hardman following yesterday's win over Scotland.

Exactly. I could call the Di Natale offsides goal decision a bit of a toss up, but Ferguson's goal was clearly offsides. McLeish cannot complain about one dicey call and then ignore the other calls he clearly benefitted from.

I've watched it again a few times today and I still don't understand why the ref awarded the foul in our favour . I can see why Scots fans would be very upset. It's true to say the 2 other big decisions went Scotland's way, but this decision was the easiest to get right. It was baffling!
The way I saw it, Alan Hutton was heading past the goal line and had to redirect the ball to keep it from also rolling out of bounds. He had to turn back inbounds to approach the ball, but meanwhile Chiellini had a direct route beeline on the ball and soon was in the closer position to it. Hutton swung back in and they barrelled into each other.

To someone taking a high school geometry course, Chiellini wasn't taking the diagonal path to the ball where Hutton was. Chiellini was closer. That sort of thing rarely gets called, however, particularly given that Hutton barely ran off course to keep the ball inbounds (though he clearly did).

Even so, it's all a moot point. Ultimately, we'll find out that Scotland really needed the win here to advance anyway -- which they clearly did not get, nor deserve, really.

I was sitting at the opposite end of the ground and so couldn't be sure of Ferguson's position, but my initial reaction was that he was offside.

I didn't think there was any foul, I just saw it as two strong players competing for the ball but like you say, it didn't really matter at that point.

Not to mention that, unlike the situations with Di Natale and Ferguson where the referee calls directly made goal differences, in Hutton's case Scotland had the opportunity to defend against the free kick called. And they failed to defend it. You can't blame a ref for that failure.

Indeed.

That is why I have been getting increasing annoyed at all the folk I have spoken to who have either accused Italy of cheating, or blamed the ref.

Both are clearly not to blame. Scotland only played well for about 20 minutes, around when we scored, and that just isn't enough to beat world champions

If Domenech doesn't like Panucci, that must mean he doesn't like ass. And if Domenech doesn't like ass, that must mean he likes dick. Domenech is therefore a faggot.

Plus they are too resistant to the rain ;) So I would say our worst jerseys ever. Last time I checked the 80's style was not in.
 I thought the green was pretty random too, plus the blue jacket underneath. I think they were probably trying to go with the theme of the Italian flag, so I hope the home jersey is red. And I agree about the too resistant to the rain thing. :frown:
In the future, watch Portugal. Their white jerseys I don't know where to begin. Fitted and VERY thin. Their jerseys made up for how bad their game was.

Oh and Donna (;)) That is your opinion the 80's are in to some. Do not go there.

Lol Poor Gigi was freezing, the white jersey is not bad just dont like the collar1
Yeah see the only part of the new kit I like is the collar. I could so see Oddo flipping that collar.

If Domenech doesn't like Panucci, that must mean he doesn't like ass. And if Domenech doesn't like ass, that must mean he likes dick. Domenech is therefore a faggot.

I had the same thought. I don't know if anyone has told Domenech's wife that he doesn't like Panucci. That could explain a lot -- and make her feel a lot less guilty about all the vibrating triple-ripple French ticklers she's bought herself over the years.

I wasn't sure what to make of those Portugal kits yesterday. They looked like tight-fitted Under Armor -- perhaps to thermally make up for how cold it was that match. I'm not sure I liked seeing that much of Cristiano Ronaldo's nipples during a match, and I liked even less of how awfully poor they played against Armenia.

    But good post. :D

    Cheers. :pint:

Omg. You almost have me sold on the new jerseys if Oddo would jsut flip that collar I could so tolerate it. :disagree:

80s are not in and never will be again although you do have the perfect hair for it :D

I kind of liked their jerseys. I'm sure I could have done without all the Cristiano Ronaldo tightness but a little Quaresma never hurt anyone :eyebrows:
They beat our Azzurri white jerseys no matter what happened just withstood the pouring rain. Unfair I tell you. It def took the attention away from the game which was a mess that they should not have won. I don't know how they plan on getting anywhere at this level to think that Portugal are favorites. :disagree:

Im just sticking up for him saying he deserves a shot, its not about what label they have on them. Toni wasn't considered world class before he was on top form and scored 30+ goals in a season. His form pushed him up because he got a chance.

Ill leave it at that though. I am sure that if we ever became managers, our player selections would depend on different reasons. ;)

Donadoni To Use 'Grande Milan' As Inspiration

Freshly vindicated Italy coach Roberto Donadoni intends to use the grand Milan side of the 90’s as the template for the Azzurri side that will seek to conquer Europe next summer.

“I want the same winning mentality as Il Grande Milan,” pronounced the legendary Rossoneri midfielder, still brimming with pride following Italy’s all-important victory in Scotland on Saturday.

“My dream is to create a squad that has a winning mentality and can think big, like the Milan sides of Sacchi and Fabio Capello.

“We will go to Austria and Switzerland with the desire to play every game to the best of our abilities. We want to win this tournament and prove that we are on the right path,” he added.

“I can imagine the European Championships will be just as difficult as the World Cup.

“We will go there with our usual ambition, playing to win. This is my mentality, always stepping on to the field looking for the best possible result.”

Donadoni also commented on the rumours that Francesco Totti and Alessandro Nesta are reconsidering their international retirement.

“The doors to the Nazionale are open for everyone and I just await signals from them. I have not ended the era of any player, but in my choices I always go for the most practical option for the whole team.”

“What counts is the performance on the field, but also giving the side a sense of consistency and always moving forward.

“Christian Vieri is in better shape than he was in the past, but there are also many interesting young prospects like Giampaolo Pazzini.”

No wonder we are not a winning squad. He is modeling the Azzurri after Milan the most successful team in Serie A

The only smart thing he can do is consider someone like Pazzini but he is not really ready for the NT.
