Maldini laughs off 'old' jibes Saturday 6 August, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

37-year-old Paolo Maldini rejected claims the Rossoneri squad is now too old to compete with Juve and Inter, and Christian Vieri is also raring to go.

“Our performance on the pitch will show whether we are still able to be decisive at the highest level,” assured the veteran defender.

“People can say all they want, but the results will prove who is right and who is wrong. Of course, we know that the older we get, the more we have to work in order to stay at peak fitness, but we are ready for that.”

Milan ended the campaign empty-handed and their overall fitness levels tumbled in the final month, where they failed to win a single game in all competitions.

Some have blamed the advanced age of the squad, including 35-year-old Marcos Cafu, 33-year-old Jaap Stam and Billy Costacurta, who will turn 40 in April 2006.

However, there are some interesting statistics to counter those claims. Milan’s medical staff confirmed that new arrival Christian Vieri has beaten all his teammates in the sprint tests over 10, 15 and 30 metres.

“He has made massive improvements in the few weeks he’s been training with us,” revealed Professor Jean-Pierre Meersseman. “Within a month Vieri will have phenomenal fitness levels.”

It is important news for the 32-year-old hitman, who has struggled with a series of injury problems and poor form during his last season at Inter
. Teammate Andriy Shevchenko is set to make his summer debut against Lugano on Thursday after recovering from an operation to remove the titanium plates put in place for a fractured cheekbone.

Meanwhile, Maldini looked at the Scudetto contenders following the arrival of Luis Figo and Patrick Vieira.

“Inter and Juventus have both strengthened their squads, but Milan have been no less active on the transfer market. Motivation and the real desire to win will have an effect, but I think that in the balance of things Juve and Milan are perhaps a little ahead of the Nerazzurri.”

yeah, we didnt need a slow, old, washed-up Vieri....

He's been a lethal supersub for a while. In some ways, I think he's only been held back by his own ego and attitude: i.e., the mental part of his game. Milan may be his first real chance in a while to start over with a club and re-establish himself once again.

The fact that he can beat others in sprints doesn't deny the fact that... we don't need him... it only proves that the condition of all the other players is crap :D

    I'm not buying that one...

fact is, injuries aside, Vieri SHOULD be part of the Italian side at next years WC

And at whose expense would Vieri be included? Unless he has an awesome season I don't think that he deserves to be there as Gilardino, Montella and Toni have proven themselves to be better players in recent times.

Gila- he desreves a spot in the squad

Montella- if he continues like last season, then he should be there too...

Toni- are you fvcking kidding ??? No way he's better than Vieri...I watched this guy play live, right in front of me, and I think he's shit !!! The second coming of Bernardo Corradi, IMO.....

Vieri is no doubt a great player, and even though I doubt Christian actually beat every single Milan player in sprints, the Rossoneri actually needed his services with the loss of Crespo. We do not.

As far as his status with the Azzurri...we have seen what he can do, and the past two tournaments he hasn't impressed me at all. Gilardino, Cassano, and Toni are the new generation and Vieri is on his way out.

I think Vieiri has always been a super striker as far as Im concerned. In recent times however, he's just not seemed to have gotten it right. Maybe it was his time with the Nerrazuri that affected his belief, after having been benched on more than a few occasions, but WC 2002 and the more recent Euro 2004 were more than disappointing, given Vieri's ability. I think more than his game, its his motivation thats taken a beating on the big stage, especially.

Vieri missed too many easy chances, he is not a good striker actually!

I still remember a game last season when inter played against us. He, without a marker, could only kick the air when the ball was just 6-yard away from our goal...what an incredible miss!! Well, thanks for that though!! :D :D

He was always disappointing and invisible in big games, not to mention his poor performance in international games like WC02 and Euro04.

Luckily, we didn't sign him and our rival Milan did. Vieri should only be the third choice behind Sheva and Gilardino. In case Milan play with one striker, I think Vieri can only warm the bench or just a sub in junk time...

Vieri? no thanks!! Trez, Ibra and Mutu are way better!!! :)

I keep having to remind myself that most of the people here are lacking a great deal of intellience, on any other forum I would of used the "" smiley...but its the norm.

Vieri isnt a good striker? Of course he isnt
