Maldini laughs off 'old' jibes Saturday 6 August, 2005

37-year-old Paolo Maldini rejected claims the Rossoneri squad is now too old to compete with Juve and Inter, and Christian Vieri is also raring to go.
“Our performance on the pitch will show whether we are still able to be decisive at the highest level,” assured the veteran defender.
“People can say all they want, but the results will prove who is right and who is wrong. Of course, we know that the older we get, the more we have to work in order to stay at peak fitness, but we are ready for that.”
Milan ended the campaign empty-handed and their overall fitness levels tumbled in the final month, where they failed to win a single game in all competitions.
Some have blamed the advanced age of the squad, including 35-year-old Marcos Cafu, 33-year-old Jaap Stam and Billy Costacurta, who will turn 40 in April 2006.
However, there are some interesting statistics to counter those claims. Milan’s medical staff confirmed that new arrival Christian Vieri has beaten all his teammates in the sprint tests over 10, 15 and 30 metres.
“He has made massive improvements in the few weeks he’s been training with us,” revealed Professor Jean-Pierre Meersseman. “Within a month Vieri will have phenomenal fitness levels.”
It is important news for the 32-year-old hitman, who has struggled with a series of injury problems and poor form during his last season at Inter . Teammate Andriy Shevchenko is set to make his summer debut against Lugano on Thursday after recovering from an operation to remove the titanium plates put in place for a fractured cheekbone.
Meanwhile, Maldini looked at the Scudetto contenders following the arrival of Luis Figo and Patrick Vieira.
“Inter and Juventus have both strengthened their squads, but Milan have been no less active on the transfer market. Motivation and the real desire to win will have an effect, but I think that in the balance of things Juve and Milan are perhaps a little ahead of the Nerazzurri.”
yeah, we didnt need a slow, old, washed-up Vieri....
BULLOCKS !!!!:fero:
