Main issue I see is that we haven't even bothered to test him in the Coppa or any friendlies yet, at least to my knowledge. And that's pretty green for a Serie A starter for a club the size of Juve.
i agree totally, we should try them out more often, but...a big but, is what chance do they have in getting in the team if they cant fet in when gigi is injured?? If they dont, they will be totally demoralised.

its obvious that we are ganna start the season with Chimenti plus Bonnefoi.

No need to those stupid goalkeepers that u have mentioned guys,, they dream to be in juve but juve above of them !

Instead of Chimenti did some mistakes in Milan's match that does not mean we should not trust him.

He's ganna start with us and we hope that he gives his good as long as buffon out of service, so that will give him some confidence to protect Juve's net at least for 2 months which is Buffun's injury duration.

What's the point in having a substitute keeper when he's not good enough to play when Buffon is injuried?
This problem should have been solved a long time ago. Chimenti is by far not good enough for this task...:(

Personally I don't think thats good enough. Juventus are one of the best teams in Europe, currently the best side in Italy - and we should be aiming for Lo scudetto and Champions league this season. I don't think Chimenti has the class and skill to guard our goal on both fronts, as he lacks authority and influence which in turn affects the defence. It wasn't Gigi's best season last season but he still pulled out the saves against Lazio and Milan.

If we don't replace him with a competent/reliable keeper,I don't rate our early season chances too well.

Those foreign keepers names mentioned here made me laugh.
van der Saar was the only foreign Juventus keeper through 108-year club history.
So I'm pretty sure that if Moggi decides to look for a new goalkeeper he would estimate only Italians - Pagliuca or maybe Storari.

**** the tradition. What if we didnt get Buffon? We were lucky we got the bastard.

When no quality Italians arent available, you will suddenly smile when a foreigner comes knocking.

Buffon will probably miss five matches at the most, it's not unthinkable.

Besides, if Cannavaro and Thuram do their thing again we might not even notice Buffon's not there.

Actually I agree. He'll only sign a keeper if there was one available on a free (Eleftheropoulous perhaps?).
Pagliuca's transfer can be alsmost free. I think that his transfer fee wouldn't exceed 1m.

1 million for a keeper who'd give you a maximum of two years on the bench doesn't sound like that good business.

Besides I wouldn't want Pagliuca to sit on anyone's bench.

Without top-class keeper it would be tough task for Juve to qualify to Last16 in CL, so Moggi has to find a replacement for Gigi, if he is out for more than 2 months. In such case 1 million for Pagliuca sounds good for me.

How do you replace the irreplaceable? That is a question that Juventus transfer guru Luciano Moggi must be asking himself today, with the likelihood that the Italian champions will be without Gigi Buffon for the next two months.

The shoulder injury he sustained in the 2-1 Trofeo Berlusconi loss to Milan at the weekend has already seriously jeopardised the club’s ambitions for the new campaign. With the outfit hoping to make a serious challenge at home and abroad, Juventus can’t afford to get off to a slow start as a result of a goalkeeping headache.

They admittedly have Antonio Chimenti, who is eagerly waiting for his chance to impress, but he’s arguably not the answer. The former Lecce and Roma man is an ideal No 2, a shot-stopper who can come in for the odd game. But there are doubts over whether he is the right man to stand in between the sticks for a sustained period, especially at this level. After all, what happens if Buffon’s recovery takes longer than expected or he is hit by the same problem later in the year?

Juventus fans will be well aware of the fact that David Trezeguet suffered with persistent shoulder problems last season, eventually leading to surgery and a three-month lay-off in order to resolve the injury. Can Juventus really afford to take such a gamble on such a key position? The answer is surely not.

So who could Juventus buy if they do opt to bring in extra cover? There seems to be a variety of options available to them. The biggest temptation may be Christian Abbiati given the uncertainty regarding his future. The Italian international joined Genoa from Milan this summer but that move is now in doubt as a result of the Rossoblu’s demotion to Serie C. It remains to be seen whether Milan would loan such a player to a title rival though.

Bologna’s Gianluca Pagliuca would also be another excellent objective for the Old Lady. He would be an ideal short-term replacement and a cheap one. He may now be of a certain vintage but he was superb last term despite his club’s relegation to Serie B. A move north would also allow the former Azzurri No 1 to keep his hopes of beating Dino Zoff’s Serie A consecutive game appearance record.

Moggi may also realistically look at signing Matteo Sereni from Lazio. Despite the fact that he earns three times more than first choice ‘keeper Angelo Peruzzi, he is again set to start the campaign as the second choice. That is unless he moves to Turin of course and if he accepts being Peruzzi’s reserve in Rome, then he will surely have no problem in becoming Buffon’s understudy in Turin.

It’s unclear at this stage whether any of the aforementioned ‘keepers will arrive, but if none of them do then another unnamed man must surely be captured. Any thoughts of signing Roma’s Antonio Cassano must be archived for now, at least until a new goalkeeper puts pen to paper on an Old Lady contract.

I'd say given our current circumstances for a temporary solution, I think Pagliuca would be my # 1 pick. Not just sentimental reasons, but I think he has the necessary experience to complement Buffon as a substitute. And good enough to take over for longer periods as and when the need arises. Surely at 40 he doesnt have an entire starter season on him, but having said that, he has just about enough to offer Juventus what we need for now and later. Cudicini and Abbiati are both solid options as well, however, given Chelsea's Mutu problems and Milan's title rival status, both would seem unlikely to give us a helping hand.

PS: Luca Marchegiani wouldnt be a bad short term replacement either.
