Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane is set to join Real Madrid, according to reports in both England and Spain on Sunday. Keane is a free agent after his release from Old Trafford in November and there had been claims that he was set to sign for Everton.

Reports on UK television have suggested that a deal has been struck while Spanish sports daily "Marca" - widely regarded to be a mouthpiece for the Madrid club - have stated that he has passed a medical examination.

Other reports in England had made the claim that David Moyes had sealed a deal to sign Keane in January, but with the player himself having stated that he would prefer not to sign for another Premiership club, boyhood heroes Celtic and Real had appeared the most likely candidate.

Real have struggled to replace holding midfielder Claude Makélélé - who was discarded after asking for earning parity with the other Galacticos at the club - and recent signings Thomas Gravesen and Pablo Garcia have not provided the inspiration they need.

Keane, at 34 years old, will also surely be no more than a stop-gap at Madrid, although with the team struggling for form and lacking a natural leader his impact would be welcome by stand-in coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro.
