Spain round-up: Deportivo keep up the pressure:D
Saturday, 12 April 2003
Roy Makaay scored twice as RC Deportivo La Coruña defeated FC Barcelona 4-2 at the Camp Nou on Saturday and reduced Real Madrid CF's advantage at the top of the Primera División to three points.

Outstanding display
Deportivo produced an outstanding second-half display to keep alive the race for the championship, although Madrid can move clear again at the top in their away match with third-placed Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Saviola opener
Barcelona, who remained ninth, opened the scoring in the first minute against their Galician visitors when Javier Saviola lobbed Juanmi with a delightful chip after a long ball from Patrick Kluivert. The away team, though, equalised through Lionel Scaloni, who capitalised on a rebound from a Makaay free-kick.

Motta shot
The home team went ahead for the second time when Kluivert inadvertently played the ball into the path of Thiago Motta and the Brazilian midfield player darted into the inside-left channel to send an angled shot past Juanmi.

Prolific Makaay
But Deportivo pressed forward at the start of the second half and Makaay's glancing header from a Marcelo Romero cross found the far corner in the 50th minute. Three minutes later the Dutch striker, the Primera División's top scorer, collected his 22nd goal of the season when he broke onto a defence-splitting ball from Sergio and slid past Bonano.

Decisive goal
Barcelona had a chance to reassert themselves when Romero was sent off in the 66th minute but Sergio's well-taken 75th-minute goal was the decisive blow. Barcelona's hopes disappreared when Saviola was dismissed soon afterwards.

Look on the bright side though, we will save ourselves the embarrassment of being destroyed by Real Madrid

and if we lose to madrid, it will be an honor, , we made this far, and lost against the champion of europe.
It is not embarrasing for me.
