ROME (AFP) – Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti has been awarded the Premio Scirea by Italian journalists, it was announced on Monday.
The award has been running yearly since 1992 and is given to players over 30 who have had an "exemplary career".
For the first time this season it was also open to foreign players who have been plying their trade in Serie A for at least 10 years and Argentine Zanetti thus became the first foreign winner.
The honour is named after Gaetano Scirea, the legendary former Juventus sweeper, who spent 14 years at the Italian giants after beginning his career at Atalanta.
The former Juventus and Italy captain died in a car accident in Poland in 1989 when he was the assistant coach at Juve under Dino Zoff.
Zanetti polled 231 of the 371 votes to join the likes of Franco Baresi, Roberto Baggio, Paolo Maldini, Gianfranco Zola and Alessandro Del Piero as winners of the award.

Foggia’s new Coach, the outspoken Zdenek Zeman, believes Italians have stopped teaching football properly.
The Azzurri were humiliated at the World Cup in South Africa this summer, receiving their marching orders in the group stages.
Interviewed in Il Corriere dello Sport, Zeman said: “I knew that Italy would do badly. Italian football finds itself in crisis.
“In Serie A today there isn’t a Coach who has got my results or who has added value to players like I did.
“I do what I always do. I say what I think. Today a Coach is no longer chosen for his competency, but out of convenience.
“I see staff with 15 collaborators, the Coach is someone because he is someone responsible. In clubs today the person responsible for the marketing is more important than the Coach.”
When asked about his own objectives for Foggia, Zeman simply said: “To teach how to play football.”
