Exactly. Statistics never tell the full story. You judge players by watching them, not by reading a couple of numbers.
most of the time they do tell the full story but they do not measure or detail external factors/conditions

but nevertheless statistics are the backbone of all sports. thats how tactical and scouting assessments are made. watching a handful of games for a specific team or player doesn't paint the full picture as much as statistics can

I beg to differ,

So for example if you had the statistics for the Ligue you could make better judgments about its players than i could after watching the Ligue regularly?

stats paint a picture on a clean canvas with all things being equal. yes, they may not take into account that a key defender for a team may be out of the line up or that the game is a heated rivalry but its as accurate as scientific studies within a controlled environment or a vacuum for example.

Yes, statistics give a better picture of a player's past but seeing them upfront gives away much more than statistics about the player's future. Statistics can't measure a player's skill, determination or ambition.

Not if half of them are to his keeper or the nearest defender.
Thats why you differentiate between passes in general, defensive passes and offensive passes. Passes in general, like that stat is, counts your average to the sides Deschamps type safe passes (defensive players in general would rule them), while there is a stats for offensive passes, which is an important distinction.

And for this season, Liverani, Gargano D'agostino and Seedorf leading them (in general registas). Offensive passes meaning passes with intent to pass forward, and with the intent to productively move the play ahead, instead of play it safe, like Balzaretti prolly does alot. When a fullback makes alot of safe passes, it generally means he cant take initiative to do anything on his own, or be able to dribble his man much, so he moves it along to hide away from initiative.

Defensive passes
http://sport.alice.it/calcio/serie-a/statistiche/giocatori/passaggi-difesa.html

In the first link you can see the total number of offensive passes made and then how many of them were successful passes. In the second link only the total number of defensive passes is given (it's because the defensive passes are successful in 99.9%)

Balzaretti has 347 successful passes in attack (out of 478 passes) and 273 passes in defense.

Here you can see offensive+defensive passes
http://sport.alice.it/calcio/serie-a/statistiche/giocatori/passaggi.html

From the defenders only Maicon, Balzaretti, Jankulovski, Garics and Cicinho made it to top30.

Yeah, seen those couple of weeks back (mainly check that site to keep track of assists), didnt know Balzaretti was that high up, good for him. But yeah, as I said, those players are the best for the offensive passes, and IMO only offensive passes should be valued, as they rightfully are prolly.

stats do measure a players skill, otherwise how can one rate skill?

Stats do give tell-tale sign on the capability of a player.

Take the NBA for example,
A good defensive players usually have high percentage in defensive rebounds and block shots while good field goal % and pts per game tell u that the guy is an offensive player ...
Those with high assist meant they are playmakers with good vision ...

IMO, u need a combination of a few stats to tell u what kind of player he is. Zidane will probably have alot of passes cos most of the play will go through him and also many assist for his ability to create space for himself and find goal scoring chances for teammates ...

Kind of minimize risk in mercato .... However, its not always fool-proof, things can still go wrong. Like for e.g. Ricardo Oliveira. He was doing nothing wrong in Real Betis but he flopped at Milan ...

There is not a single juve player in the top 30 for offensive or defensive passes....really shows our long ball tactics been working i guess...sheesh

My bad The Prince of Passing Sissoko closed in on the 27th spot for the offensive + defensive list.... Way to fuckin go juve!
