Video: Iran's Close Escape In Pyongyang

Below are links to two behind the scenes video clips of Iran’s players trying to escape an angry North Korean crowd.

The action came after Iran defeated North Korea 2-0 in Pyongyang in a World Cup qualifier in March 2005. The catalyst for the bad feeling was the late dismissal of defender Nam Song-chol for pushing Syrian referee Mohamed Kousa in frustration after the official had refused vehement North Korean appeals for a penalty.

The match officials couldn’t leave the pitch for 20 minutes after the final whistle as the fans threw rocks, bottles and chairs.

The violence continued as thousands of angry North Korea supporters prevented Iran's players from boarding the team bus. Riot police eventually cleared a way through for Iran’s players to depart two hours later.

The incident prompted then Iranian coach Branko Ivankovic to remark: 'The atmosphere on the pitch and outside the pitch was not a sports atmosphere. It is very disappointing when you feel your life is not safe. My players tried to get to the bus after the game but it was not possible -- it was a very dangerous situation.'

Clip One:

In the dressing room, Arash Bohrani is hiding behind a Ferydoon Zandi who is ready for action if the fans manage to break in.

Clip Two:

The players are leaving a hurry and Hamburg star Mehdi Mahdavikia teases Bayern Munich’s Ali Karimi that he would have scored three goals if he had run that fast during the game
