Inter are planning a swoop for England Coach Sven Goran Eriksson, according to reports in Italy.
Eriksson, who finishes his tenure of the English national side at the World Cup this summer, has been identified by Nerazzurri chief Massimo Moratti as the ideal candidate to join the club as director of football.
Indeed Moratti’s decision to approach the Swede came upon the insistence of Coach Roberto Mancini, who is eager to reunite with the man who gave him his first start in top-flight coaching.
Mancini and Eriksson have been close friends for years, ever since Eriksson took over at the helm of a Mancini-inspired Sampdoria side in 1992.
Moratti actually attempted to bring the two to Inter in 1997, only to be rebuffed by the then Samp President Enrico Mantovani.
Instead, the former Italy international followed his mentor to Lazio, where, at the end of his playing career, Eriksson promoted Mancio to Assistant Coach.
Moratti is hoping to persuade Eriksson to revive his special partnership with his former pupil to bring Inter their first title success since 1989, with talks said to already be at an advanced stage.
The former Roma and Benfica Coach is tired of the numerous bitter tabloid intrusions into his private life and would welcome a return to the country where he enjoyed the most successful years of his career.
The chance to restore friendly working relationships at such a high-profile club is highly tempting but the only question for Eriksson is whether, after years six years of being starved of day-to-day club coaching, he is prepared to plump for a backseat role at this stage in his career.
