Seventeen years have passed since the saddest 25 April in the club’s history. In 1995, the whole Bianconeri community mourned the death of Andrea Fortunato. After a year of treatment, the young defender lost his battle with leukaemia at the age of 24.
It was a tragedy that shook the football world. In particular his team mates who, just like today’s Juventus side, were chasing an important target at the time. Gianluca Vialli moved everyone with a touching speech at the funeral. “We believed you to be invincible. In these eleven months you were an example for us, for how you dealt with true problems – not those to do with winning and losing – with courage and calmness, strength and determination. We loved you and will keep you in our hearts. Honour to you, our brother Andrea Fortunato.”
Antonio Conte, another former team-mate of the defender, will have an additional reason to spur his men on to success in Cesena this evening. A success in memory of the unforgettable Andrea Fortunato. Forever in our hearts.
