Del Piero offers comfort to Abidal and Malafeev...
Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero has offered a hand of solace to Barcelona defender Eric Abidal and Zenit St. Petersburg goalkeeper Vjaceslav Malafeev.
Abidal underwent surgery today to treat a liver tumour, and Del Piero had kind words for the French international.
"I know Abidal will fight like he does on the pitch," he told the press.
"He was a great rival in the World Cup final in 2006 against France. But I feel like I am his team-mate and I wish him all the best and I hope to see him recovered on the pitch soon.
Del Piero also touched on the tragedy which occurred in the Malafeev family, as the goalkeeper received the devastating news of his wife Marina's death in a car accident.
"I was left struck by what has happened to Malafeev, who I played against in the Champions League three years ago.
"He has gone through something terrible, the death of his wife while he was with Zenit for their Europa League game against Twente. There are no words for this, but I send him my condolences."
