15.03.2010 What has changed?
The party didn’t last long. I scored the 300th goal (+2, did you think I forgot?) of my career and then, the 301st right after that.
Unfortunately the party didn’t last long, because I hoped to celebrate this target with a victory. I have told quite often that a goal, even being “vitally” important for the attacker, isn’t worth much if the team doesn’t win. Unfortunately the result we have built up, with remarkable beginning of the match, was neutralized by Siena recovery, and here we are to talk about our mistakes and the lost opportunity, even if we did our best in the match and especially at the beginning.
Back to my goals, just for a moment forgetting about what has happened later, I have to say that it was wonderful to look up at the section where Sonja, my son Tobias and my friends were and see all these people who are dear to me, to celebrate with me. The idea to have shirts with number 300 on the back was just great, I didn’t know anything about it, leave alone the shirts with number 301! Just ingenious!
At the end of the match I was asked what has changed and what has remained unchanged since the day I scored my first goal, on the 22nd of November 1993, playing professionally for Padova football club. I answered that my will to improve my performance, to win and to be the best has never changed. And this can be a good reason to overcome the disappointment of this match and to give our best already in the next match against Fulham.
Ps. After the post match interviews I thought over this question. Actually something has changed compared to 17 years ago. And not just the time that passes. I saw the changes looking up at the stage on Sunday afternoon.
