When Del piero is played on the wings like he was most recently against France, he will not play at his best and that's a fact. First of all, it's not even his position, second, he doesn't have the pace he had 10 years ago.

Del piero's game is largely dependant on his vision and experience rather than his speed and flair. That's not unusual since he is 34 afterall. Adapting to a position on the left wing where he is obviously uncomfortable playing in is no easy task. Let's not forget that Italy aren't exactly going to be playing against teams that lack in quality.

At Juve, Alex has a lot more freedom. He can drop back to help out the midfield and go wide at the wing if he pleases. He can also play alongside Trez for 90 mins, that's entirely up to him. He doesn't have that freedom when he plays for Italy, at least not in a 4-3-3 formation.

He would be isolated at the left wing with very little space to create anything. His only way of attacking would be by beating his man and despite his great form and outstanding skill, he lacks the speed to do so.

It's hard to imagine Alex starting in a 4-3-3 although I hope he does and proves me wrong because frankly, that's the only way Donadrone is going to play this competition.
We must NOT judge on only one single match. Ale didn't play good against France but neither did the rest of team. I completely remember one match against Wales in San Siro a couple of years ago in which Ale played on the left flank and definitely was the best player of the pitch.

Ale deserves to have a starting spot in the EUROs. He IS the coppacannoniero ffs and is in a far better form than both Cassano and Di Natale.

Right so you say I shouldn't base my opinion on one game while you go on blabbering about a game that took place 5 years ago, much less against Wales. Unbelievable how hypocritical some people are.
Italy are playing Netherlands and France, not Wales or Northern Island.

Don't get me wrong, Ale is my favourite player of all time and I would love to see him start and I whole-heartedly believe he deserves to start but I don't think he will for very obvious reasons I have stated before.

Del Piero Breaks Another Azzurri Record

Italy striker Alessandro Del Piero cannot stop breaking records as his participation in Euro 2008 will mean he becomes the first Italian to smash the record for playing in his fourth consecutive European Championship.

Del Piero joins a list of greats including Denmark’s Peter Schmeichel who also played in four European Championships 1988, 1992, 1996 and Euro 2000.

Pinturricchio’s inclusion Roberto Donadoni’s side this year means he breaks an Italian record as he becomes the first Azzurro to play in four different European Championship’s

The Juventus legend, who holds the record for the Bianconeri’s all time appearances and goals scored, played his first Euro for Italy in England in 1996.

He then played in Holland and Belgium in 2000 where he was blamed for Italy’s defeat to France in the final.

The Juventus hit-man was called up by Giovanni Trapattoni to represent the Azzurri in Portugal during Euro 2004 but Italy had a woeful tournament and they went out at the group stage.

Now, Del Piero will be flying the flag for Italy once again as he is set to play a big part in what is likely to be his last European Championship for La Nazionale.

France’s Lillian Thuram and Holland’s Edwin Van Der Sar will also be appearing in their fourth European Champiosnhips.

I just hope this yellow-green cover doesn't mean he'll be a sub in the EUROs.
I just want to see Del Piero and the Azzurri do good. Whereas in 2006 I wanted Italy to win badly for Italy, now I'm much more of a Del Piero fan. I want Italy to win the tournament and Del Piero to be part of it, just because he has had such a great season with Juventus.

from official site;

May 30th 2008, Italia v Belgio 3-1

The last match, before the beginning of the European championship, was a very good test, crowned with victory.

Both in the first and the second time we led very attentive game. In these friendly matches it is very important to cath up with football, played after the break of the end of the championship and regain the confidence of your team-mates.

On the 2nd of June we are leaving to Baden, where our training session will be held.

See you soon,

Alessandro
