... Who are the figures in history and the political world who have caught your interest and imaginations??

I haven't read that widely on historical figures, but one who caught my imagination years ago was Erwin Rommel. This military record is very interesting - he was one of the finest German exponents of blitzkreig, and he was involved in the plot to kill Hitler.

Talleyrand - A brilliant and machiavelic French diplomat. He was already active before the French revolution, and managed to stay in high positions (including Minister of Foreign affairs under Napoleon) until the 1815.

Among others, he worked on the declaration of Human Rights, the coup d'état of Napoleon, the Vienna conference, ... He even participated at the partitioning of the Low Countries in 1830.

Fascinating guy really. Without him Europe would be very different nowadays.

Umar Ibn Abd al-Aziz. Although he ruled for just three years, his ruling years are still praised in the history until now. You can know how he was thinking by reading how he was speaking to his people:

“Rulers usually appoint people to watch over their subjects. I appoint you a watcher over me and my behaviour. If you find me at fault in word or action guide me and stop me from doing it."

i am studying the italian unification and conte di cavour has really caught my interest. many see garibaldi as the key figure, and he was very important, but cavour was monumental in the unification.

another guy has to be saladin i guess. they way he united the muslims under one and fought against the crusaders was amazing and to do that in a time where he was up against the military might of King Richard of england, Barbarossa and all sorts of other forces.

I was about to mention Saladin. Amazing guy.

Another amazing thing i heard the other day was how the assasin's threatened him, i cant remember what, but they got into his base, which was fully guarded and left a poison bisuit on his pillow as a warning. And none of his guards knew a thing, amazing story, but ofcourse i cant tell it properly
