I am reading Joe McGinnis' wonderful book The Miracle of Castel di Sangro.

Highly recommended, BTW. :)

My question: what became of Castel di Sangro? I searched Serie B and C, with no luck, and can not seem to find any information at all concerning lower leagues (Dilletanti, Campionato di Eccellenza Regionale, Campionato Promozione, or Prima, Seconda and Terza Categoria) on the net.

Anyway, I'm just curious where they ended up ( or if they changed names, were absorbed, or ceased existance  )

Help appreciated :pint:

*sigh* Why I miss the old goal.com. It really rocked at this sort of stuff in the early days.

But if you :google: ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castel_di_Sangro_Calcio

interesting bit: Carlo Cudicini and WC06's Vincenzo Iaquinta are both former players

I don't seem to find it around much either. It looks like it was last in C2C in the early 2000s before going off the map.

    Thank you, sir.

Since then, they have not done nearly as well, falling back down to Serie C2 and then being cancelled from Italian football in 2005. Out of its ashes a new club was formed, called Pro Castel Di Sangro. They now play in a Regional Division.

Both Bonomi and Spinesi eventually made their way to Serie A teams, and Bonomi was the first ex-Castel di Sangro player to score in Serie A.

So they are actually gone. Wow.

    Thanks for the link, Greg.

Can't explain it, by I am really sad that they ceased to exist (at least as originally constituted)

I just got done reading the book a week ago, it ranks up there with "A season with Verona" by Tim Parks

The ending was a bit...well lets say odd, but an enjoyable book nontheless

The new team is in Serie D, I believe, they are trying to make their way back up the looooong... ladder !!

I found some of their results by googling "Pro Castel Di Sangro"
