Augsburg, Germany - The first goal-scorer of the 1966 World Cup final, Helmut Haller, has been placed in the intensive care unit at a German hospital after suffering a heart attack on Friday.
Haller made 33 appearances for Germany from 1958-1970, scoring 13 goals in the striker role, including the opening tally in the 1966 World Cup final, a 4-2 loss to England.
The 67-year-old made his international debut in 1958 at the age of 19 and played in three World Cups, becoming one of the first Germans to play abroad, winning three Italian championships, one with Bologna in 1964 and a pair with Juventus in 1972 and 1973.
Haller began his league-play career with the German squad Augsburg before heading to Bologna and then eventually Juventus. The striker returned to his hometown outfit in 1973 and then retired six years later.
