Juve put Grygera on hold
Wednesday 24 January, 2007
Juventus have ruled out the immediate capture of Zdenek Grygera after revealing that the Ajax man will only arrive at the end of the season.
The stopper has signed a four-year contract with the Bianconeri which will activate in June, but there was talk that he could be netted during January given the club’s defensive problems.
However, Old Lady chief Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has insisted that the Czech international isn’t set for an early introduction to Italian football.
“The player wants to come as soon as possible, but Ajax are demanding too much to let him leave,” said Cobolli Gigli on Wednesday.
The defender’s deal with the Dutch club expires at the end of the season and Juve were reportedly ready to offer up to £570,000 to sign him now.
However, the Amsterdam side are reportedly demanding £2.8m – a massive amount when you consider he will be available on a free in June.
The Bianconeri chief also underlined the club’s plans for next season after again assuring fans of a competitive Juve.
“We are working hard in view of next term,” he added. “We have to invest heavily and the board of directors will meet in February. I am sure we will be able to bring Juve back to the top.
“Now we must focus on today. As to our champions, I don’t really believe Gianluigi Buffon and David Trezeguet want to leave.
“I am confident we will convince them to stay, although we still need to discuss the situation with both men.”
