Julio Grondona has been elected president of the Argentina Football Association (AFA) for the eighth time in a row.

Grondona, who has led the AFA since 1979 and is senior vice-president of world soccer’s governing body FIFA, was re-elected at an assembly on Friday and will keep the post until at least 2011.

Forty-four of the 49 clubs entitled to vote at the AFA elections backed him.

Grondona, 76, was a founding member of Arsenal, who play in the Argentine First Division, and was club president until 1976.
