I rememeber when Maradona never took Zanetti or Cambisaso and never played Milito in the WC the same summer in which Inter won a treble with those players who were immense for them. He took players we nevee knew or have heard of since. They were terrible. Massive under achievers.
Maradona was terrible as a coach / selection. Remember when he gave Messi defensive duties and he couldn't deliver up-front? There are some players out there you don't f#%& like that. Now they don't have Icardi but have Pavon or Acuna. Funny, I very much liked Sampaoil when he was at Chile when they won Copa America and played sooo much beautiful football while winning. Then he moved to Sevilla and failed.

Plays attacking/winger mid for independiente that won sudamericana, even scored in the final. High work rate with a lot of grinta, he was dubbed the new burrachaga, but you kids don't remember him.
i do remember a certain burruchaga, tho :klin: '86 world champion, scored the winner in the final against west germany. never seen him play besides the wc, but he looked like a very solid player.

Argentina to drop Serie A players
By Football Italia staff

Argentina again seem set to drop Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Federico Fazio, but also Lucas Biglia, against Croatia.

The Seleccion and Coach Jorge Sampaoli were bitterly criticised after a 1-1 draw with Iceland, in which Lionel Messi had a penalty saved.

Despite complaints from fans and the media that Juventus pair Dybala and Higuain were left out, Pipita only coming off the bench for the final minutes, Sampaoli seems set to repeat the pattern.

Roma defender Fazio is again heading for the bench, while Milan midfielder Biglia did start, but should be dropped in favour of Enzo Perez.

The system also changed from 4-4-1-1 to a 3-4-3 with Cristian Pavon joining Sergio Aguero and Messi in attack.

Argentina take on current group leaders Croatia on Thursday.

Argentina (probable): Caballero; Mercado, Otamendi, Tagliafico; Salvio, Mascherano, Enzo Perez, Acuna; Messi, Aguero, Pavon

Oh boy...

 sampaoli has quite frankly lost the plot, I wouldn't be surprised to see croatia get something out of this match

4 years to prepare for World Cup and after the first match the entire lineup and formation is changed in a panic. Amazing stuff. Can't figure out how to put a team around Messi yet.

It's a normal day at work for them though. Can't find and stick to one good formation. Over-abundance in attack is their curse.
