No I don't think the Italian thing is important, but the club's idea (from the top) is to create top Italians with top foreign players, to retain our identity. I agree with that, although I know that in the 21st century many people would sell their identity, their house and their mother to have a successful team no matter where the players come from.

Why would Marotta lie if he's been directly asked about that matter by a journalist
... because he can? Why would he tell the truth to the media?

After losing out on Pazzini, Matri is the next guy in line. Gian is right, he'll be signed in the summer to a multi-year contract. Who else are we going to sign instead?

There are people who are disappointed that the team has an Italian core, not the other way around.
As an Italian team, we should have an Italian core.
No, nobody has a problem with most of the players being Italian. That is understandable and sensical. The problem arises in that we are signing mediocre Italian players at hefty transfer fees, coveting them as the main players of the side... all the while passing on the likes of quality like Cassano. The problem here is quality, not nationality.

That's because of Lippi. There was players like Cassano, Balotelli, G. Rossi, and Aquilani at home.
I'm not sure they would have saved you. Well, maybe Cassano could have against the Slovaks, but in reality it's still a pretty poor side. Certainly a far cry from the Azzurri I used to watch as a kid in the 90's.

Suarez, Forlan, Ribery, Gourcuff, Nasri, Benzema... yeah, I'd much rather have them than the worst Azzurri side I've ever seen, too. :D

That's what I call world class. Cassano is the only one of the group mentioned by Joe who could've made a difference. Balotelli is still too green and G.Rossi and Aquilani still have a ways to go to be quite that good.
