because he was born in usa and lived there for a number of years in his early life but chose to play for italy because of other reasons (read: why play for sucky usa when one can play for italy?)

but there is a thread to discuss this issue in the international football sub forum. so take it there
Oh that's the reason...I thought there's some other better explanation.

But I like the sentence : "Why play for sucky USA when one can play for Italy". :juventus:

well the one that won the world cup last time didn't look all that great before the tourney began.

italian national team tends to do well when they are written off

That team was one of the best I've ever watch.
Italian NT from 2000 and the one from 2004 were also fantastic. But the actual one is way below the line.

I thought it looked good, which is why I put money on them at 9/1 to win the whole thing before it started. :D

True.

Never write off Italy and Germany off, however poor they appear, because they know how to win games at major tournaments.

Then they would not be mediocre either.
They could still be mediocre by Italy standards.

The team that are capable of reaching the semis is definitely far from mediocre by any standard Red.
Just because an Italy team makes the semi doesn't mean they are good; it depends who they beat to get there.

Also, this Italy team, no matter what they do, is mediocre compared to some of the great Italy teams of the past.

You have the point here, this team looks miles away when compared to some Italy historical ones.
But I think that you need to beat at least one good team to get the semis.
It is true that previous Italian NT didn't have a proper opponent until the very last stages (Germany in the semis) but in my opinion this Italian team would suffer the embarrassment against Ghana,USA,Czech Rep(at the time),Australia(under Guus) and Ukraine. Having no decent fullbacks , struggling Juventus defense, wingers that are far from good and Gilardino,Pazzini,Rossi,Iaquinta,Pepe and Di Natale in the attack(maybe the best part of the team) makes me feel that they're not capable of reaching the quarters.
But true ,comparing to some previous Italian NTs this one is mediocre, sorry didn't follow you properly Red.
