NIALL QUINN wants to celebrate the 10th birthday of the Stadium of Light by restoring its reputation as an impregnable fortress.
The Black Cats moved from Roker Park a decade ago, and lost just three times in their first two seasons at their new home.
In recent times Sunderland’s record at the Stadium of Light has been less impressive but chairman Quinn believes the club’s return to the Premiership with Roy Keane at the helm will be the catalyst for success.
Quinn said: “When the ground is full and the fans are behind the team, the stadium is an incredible place.
“It scared the life out of teams some days. I think we will see more of those days, with the fans behind the team, and we can get back to making the stadium a place which intimidates visiting teams.”
The Stadium of Light was opened with a friendly against Dutch masters Ajax on July 30, 1997.
The Black Cats mark the stadium’s 10th birthday with a friendly against Italian giants Juventus on Saturday.
Quinn said: “10 years at the Stadium of Light is a real landmark for the club and the Juventus game is a great event for us to look forward to. We are hoping for a special eve-of-season atmosphere next weekend. That will set us up nicely for the start of the Premiership campaign.”
Ball added: “To mark the fact that the Stadium of Light has been open for 10 years now, it was only right that the club organised a game against top-class opposition – and they don’t come much bigger in football than Juventus.
“And, of course, the game will be terrific for the manager to test his team out against quality opposition the week before the Premiership season starts.”
Tickets for the Juventus game are still available from the Stadium of Light box office or by calling 0845 671 1973.
Season ticket holders have until 5pm Friday to buy tickets at £15 adults, £5 under 16s and over 65s, using voucher 58, although they are no longer guaranteed their usual seats.
Non-season ticket holders can buy tickets for the game priced at £20 adults, £5 under 16s and over 65s.
