On second thought this could turn out to be a pretty good signing as his eye for a pass and strong finish he would add unpredictability in midfield. He's obviously not necessary for Serie A but his talents will be a useful alternative to relying on Tevez in the EL when we are struggling to breakdown inferior foreign teams with the 3-5-2.
Nah, Kyle.
If it was about the EL, then Vucinic would have been a stronger weapon when trying to break down those inferior foreign teams you're talking about. If we're talking solely about the remaining half of the season, then we're gaining absolutely nothing, except an opportunity to play Guarin instead of Padoin on those matches against Chievo or Livorno, when Conte will rest some of the starters for the EL matches.
As someone said, this transfer is more about the next year and on.
Imo, this is what happened: Mirko has a year and a half left on his contract and he just turned 30. Since we found top attackers, we didn't rely on him anymore and we could consider selling him. The chance to sell him and get something out of him was this winter and the following summer in 6 months. Mirko was also willing to leave and sign the last big contract, preferably in a team where he'll be a starter, and preferably in Italy.
Then there is Mazzarri, who tried to sign him in 2011 for Napoli and was linked to him in the summer of 2013, the moment he joined Inter. Actually, Vucinic is the type of player without whom Mazzarri's tactics simply don't work. His Sampdoria relied on Cassano linking play in attack. Hamsik, and much more Pandev, did the same job in Napoli. Currently, Inter don't have such player due to the flopping of Belfodil. Palacio, Icardi and Milito aren't that kind of attackers. Ricky Alvarez couldn't play the role with discipline, so lately Mazzarri tried Guarin there, but the Colombian failed because he doesn't have the characteristics to play with the back towards the goal, receive the ball and be the playmaker in attack. For Mazzarri's tactics to work, Vucinic or other players with similar characteristics are needed.
So, Inter want Vucinic. We find a buyer to satisfy both Juve and Mirko. The rest is all about the compensation. We were either going to get money or a player. That's how Guarin's name popped up.
