SCHUMI STILL LOOMS LARGE

Ferrari unveiled their new Formula One car with former champion Michael Schumacher unable to keep away and taking a sneak preview in the workshop.

Schumacher, the seven-times world champion who retired at the end of last season, travelled down from Milan to the team's factory near Modena with managing director Jean Todt but kept a low profile away from the media.

"Michael is in the workshop, having a look at the car," Todt told reporters, "Maybe he would like to sit in it. I'm joking, of course, as he will look at it from a different perspective - no longer as a driver," added the Frenchman.

Schumacher is continuing to work with Ferrari in a consulting role although it is not yet clear exactly what form that collaboration will take.

"We are taking advantage of having him here...He is an asset for us," said Todt, who did not rule out Schumacher taking a spin in the car at some stage.

"If he wants to drive it, of course we will give him that pleasure," he said.

Todt said the new car featured several improvements with Ferrari technical staff pinpointing aerodynamics, suspension and the gearbox as the key areas focused on.

"On all levels I see improvements but of course we need to verify those with the physical tests," Todt said.

Ferrari's Brazilian driver Felipe Massa will carry out the first tests of the new F-2007 on the team's Fiorano track on Monday.

"I get a good feeling from looking at the car and now we need to get on with running it and carrying out our programme," said Massa.

"It's a beautiful car and there are a lot of changes in the details. The front suspension of the car is quite different."

The Italian team said that the various changes to the car meant it had increased weight from last season by almost 10 kilos.

Schumacher's replacement, Kimi Raikkonen, who has joined Ferrari from rivals McLaren, said he was not yet sure when he would test the car but added that he was looking forward to watching Massa put it through its paces.

"I'll be here and I will be interested to see the new car running. It looks very nice but, of course, that doesn't tell the full story. It will be very exciting to get in it and drive," said the Finn.

Here's hoping Kimi & Massa can bring the title back home.

Raikkonen will need tough Ferrari - Illien

Ferrari will need to build Kimi Raikkonen a very tough, hard-wearing car in 2007 if it is to survive the treatment the Finn will give it on track, former Mercedes engine guru Mario Illien says.

"No driver works the car harder and nobody bangs it so hard lap after lap over the kerbs," Illien told Bild. "Ferrari will have to build Raikkonen a car like a tank if they want him to win the title."

Raikkonen has twice been runner-up in the F1 championship and at McLaren had more than his fair share of car failures.

F1racing

This years winner will be the one with the less mechanical problems,
i think it will be a Kimi-Alonso duel,
Kimi breaks the car apart and Mercedes engine explodes by its own, it will be an interesting year,
i dont underestimate Renault but i do underestimate their drivers.

Formula one will never be the same since Shumy retired.
now why would anyone want F1 to be the same as before? that would just be boring!!!!

I dont like the engine development freeze...IMO, that sucks!

It'll be interesting to see what Fisi can REALLY do now that he's the #1 driver in his team. but surely, the battle's gonna be between alonso and Kimi again.

Hope McLaren overturn their winless season into one with a championship; both drivers AND constructors!

    Not a chance. :D

    Ferrari win both titles!
Good shout but can't argue with Cronios - "This years winner will be the one with the less mechanical problems, i think it will be a Kimi-Alonso duel,
Kimi breaks the car apart and Mercedes engine explodes by its own, it will be an interesting year, i dont underestimate Renault but i do underestimate their drivers."

If Fisi can hold his nerve & drive like we all know he can, then he will be serious opposition for Kimi & the scuderia.

Kimi Raikkonen completed his first test for Ferrari on Tuesday afternoon at Vallelunga in Italy.

The 27-year-old Finn, who Ferrari signed to replace the now retired seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, turned in 39 laps of the track in damp and dreary conditions at the Rome circuit in Ferrari’s 2006 car.

And afterwards, he revealed that the he was keen to get some dry running as soon as possible.

"The first impression was good even if I would have preferred more laps in the dry," said Raikkonen, a winner of nine Grands Prix.

"It was nice, I was a bit excited but it was nice to be in a car again."

Raikkonen's Brazilian team-mate Felipe Massa, who is set for his second year with the Scuderia, was also in action. He got to grips with the new 2007 car, emerging fastest in 1:14.493.

That put him 0.787 seconds ahead of Raikkonen, who was more concerned with acclimatising to his new surroundings.

"So many things are different," added the Finn, who hoped to test the new car next week.

Ferrari also planned to test at Mugello, but opted out in the end amid predictions of thunderstorms.
