there is something I must tell you all.. I think I was gonna enjoy Italy world cup win more, if this whole story about Zidane was not there. If Materazzi really insulted his mother that I can only say well done zizou, and we all know how materazzi is. I hate him and I hate all interistas. they should be banned from NT.

Marco Materazzi has issued his own statement about the infamous Zinedine Zidane headbutt.

The Italy defender was the victim of Zidane's violent attack in the dying stages of the World Cup final and he has not emerged unblemished, with speculation rife about what he must have said to provoke such an extreme response.

Numerous different versions have been reported in the media, while the Frenchman has finally broken his silence about the night's events.

Zidane has claimed that Materazzi "pronounced very tough words about my mother and my sister" but the Internazionale defender has again pleaded his innocence.

"I didn't mention anything about religion, politics or racism," said Materazzi.

"I didn't insult his mother. I lost my mother when I was 15 years old and still get emotional when I talk about it.

"Naturally, I didn't know that his mother was in hospital but I wish her all the best.

"Zidane is my hero and I have always admired him a lot."

Fifa have launched an official investigation into the dramatic episode.

I think somewhere along the lines is a clash of cultures, attitudes or more accurately worlds.

Materazzi is not the trustworthy type, and although Zizou has had numerous hothead momments, he's not the type to lie or play victim.

I think the kind of insults Materazzi thinks is not out of line is definately different to Zidane's. From Materazzi's defence I kinda think he DID insult Zidane's mother...there kinda a hint of guilt in there...

Anyways, it didn't turn out to be racist, so its not as awful as I thought, but considering Zidane's mother was in the hospital, then yes....its understandable to me..

It is not a hidden fact that I'm a big Azzurri fan... I remmber my pain and sadness each time Italy goes out during the past four touranments, I've always dreamed of Italy being crowned as world champions... but Zidane accident has killed a huge amount of my joy.

When Cannavaro tackles Zidane near the end of 2nd half and he asked for substitution I had a very bad feeling... I really wished him to complete the game so when he gets back to the field I applaud... not only me but all my friends who support Italy were applauding as no one wants Zidane to leave the field inured in the last game of his wonderful career.

Then come the Materazzi incident... I won't defend Zidane's reaction but I know one thing... he should never swallow an insult coming from Materazzi even if the expense was the World Cup trophy.

I couldn't resist my tears when he left the stadium walking near the crowning stand with a bending head.

Respect ZiZo... Football lost a huge amount of charm in his retirment day... and of course... I don't wanna hear the word "Fair Play" again... ever.

Materazzi faces FIFA probe Thursday 13 July, 2006

FIFA have opened a disciplinary inquiry over Marco Materazzi’s conduct in the World Cup Final.

French captain and ex-Juve midfielder Zinedine Zidane was sent off after felling Materazzi with a head-butt in extra-time, but claimed it was the result of severe provocation from the Inter defender.

In an interview for French television, Zidane claimed that the ex-Perugia stopper had insulted his mother and sister, but he refused to repeat exactly what was said.

“They were very harsh words,” the Frenchman explained. “I am a man and some words are harder to hear than actions. I would rather have taken a blow to the face than hear that.”

After hearing the broadcast, FIFA have decided to open a probe and both players will appear before their disciplinary committee on Thursday July 20.

However, the controversial Materazzi has denied that he made any reference to Zidane’s mother in the incident.

“I didn’t insult his mother,” he stressed. “I lost my mother at the age of 15 and even now I nearly cry when I think about it.”

after great games thrue the second round till the final even inthe final he had the nerves to try the panenca, lets admit he is one of the great that played the game
and lets be frank if someone tried to curse my mother 1 time i would not only give him a head but i would hang him..... so plz dont roll your eyes but confess it i wouldnt like to be in zizou'z place even if i did have the talent to be there........

Listen, Im not trying to defend Materazzi, but at the end of the day, insults are a part of the game, who cares if this was his last game, Zidane didnt think of that when he hit Materazzi.

Insults are part of the game, trying to provoce your oponent is part of the game, Zidane is not 19 years old, he knows that this is part of the game, and if he fall into the tramp is his fault, and he has nobody to blame but himself.

He let his team down when the team most need it him, he was the capatin of the team, and he fell on Matrix tramp like a young kid.

If someone insults my mom in a soccer match I will kick his ass all over the floor, but you know what, if that game was the World Cup Final, my last game, my team needs me, I will wait till the end of the game to kick his ass.

All of this people who are making a buzz over there are a bunch of hypocrits, and these would not have happend if other player would have been involved.

I have alot of respect for Zidane, and I think he is one of the greates players I have ever seen (if not the greatest), but that doesnt mean that the world have to come up with a story to try to make rigth what he did wrong.

Materazzi set for FIFA talks Friday 14 July, 2006

Marco Materazzi will meet with members of FIFA’s disciplinary panel on Friday after accusations that he provoked Zinedine Zidane to head-butt him in the World Cup Final.

FIFA announced last night that the Inter stopper would be investigated after Zidane went on French television this week and insisted that the Italian insulted members of his family.

Although both players were summoned to appear in Zurich on July 20, Materazzi has successfully appealed to be heard at some stage today.

"He wants to answer FIFA’s questions and that's it," his agent Vincenzo Morabito told Sky Sports News. "Marco should enjoy the World Cup so it's just a pity there is so much talk about this.

"I just think that it has been exaggerated – the most important thing that happened that night was the reaction of Zidane.

"I don't understand his reaction – on the pitch there are a lot of things like that, that happen between players.

"Hopefully after Friday he can relax and then go on holiday so he can forget that and enjoy the World Cup win."

Materazzi has insisted that he didn’t insult Zidane’s mother as has been claimed and feels the saga has gone on for far too long.

"Marco has apologised already to Zidane and that should be the end of it,” continued Morabito last night.

"I don't think he's upset or angry, I think he's annoyed and he's very sad because there has been a lot said about what he said and didn't say and it's not right.

"What he said is one of the most common things stated on a pitch and the reaction was exaggerated.”

Should Materazzi be found guilty of any wrongdoing, he faces the threat of a fine or even match bans.

Materazzi was sent crashing to the turf by a Zidane head-butt near the end of extra-time of the July 9 final in Berlin following a verbal altercation.

Mystery has surrounded the exact nature of the abuse directed at Zidane by Materazzi ever since the incident, which subsequently earned the Inter Milan centre-half a two-match ban from world governing body FIFA.

But in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport here Tuesday, Materazzi revealed it was a remark he made about Zidane's sister that provoked the French captain's moment of madness.

Materazzi said that when Zidane offered to give him his France jersey after the final whistle in response persistent shirt-tugging by the Italian, he had replied: "I would prefer your sister."

Materazzi insisted however that he should not blamed for sparking the incident. "I did not cause it," he told Gazzetta. "I answered verbally with a provocation to defend myself.

"Yes, I was tugging his shirt, but when he said to me scornfully 'If you want my shirt so much I'll give it to you afterwards,' is that not a provocation? I answered that I'd prefer his sister, it's true.

"It's not a particularly nice thing to say, I recognise that. But loads of players say worse things ... I didn't even know he had a sister before all this happened," added Materazzi, who is suspended for Italy's Euro 2008 qualifying rematch with France in Paris on Wednesday.

Zidane was given a three-match ban for his part in the spat, but as he had retired from football he was made to do three days of community service instead.

Materazzi said he would have been happy to do three years of community service if it meant he could play against France on Wednesday before criticising FIFA for what he felt was favouritism shown towards Zidane.

"I only know that I was the one head-butted and I got a two-match ban," said the Inter Milan defender.

"I would have done three months or even three years of community service to be on the pitch at Saint Denis. But I definitely count less than Zidane."

Zidane has never specified what Materazzi said to him and has pointedly refused to apologise to his opponent.

Asked on July 12 what exactly Materazzi had said, Zidane would only offer that it was "very personal and concerned his mother and his sister."

"You hear those things once and you try to walk away. That's what I wanted to do because I am retiring. You hear it a second time and then a third time ..."

"id rather have your sisters shirt" is a standard remark made in almost every single game. i played football for the last 8 years and i hear alot worst then that when i play. zizo is very arrogant and when he said what he said he had to know a remark was coming.
