Muslera, who plays for Montevideo giants Nacional, is one of the most promising goalkeepers to come out of South America in recent years.

At only 21 he has already cemented himself a starting role for his club, and is highly likely to be the successor of Fabian Carini as the goalkeeper of the Uruguayan national team.

Last season he was in outstanding form as Nacional reached the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores. Muslera, who stands at 1.90 metres, was regularly Nacional’s best player on the field, and his performances attracted huge interest from leading European clubs.

For now it seems that the team who are leading the race to sign the goalkeeper are Inter Milan. The Italian champions are very keen on the youngster, and are likely to offer him a lucrative contract at the club in the next few days.

Italian rivals Juventus are also interested in the goalkeeper, and are in advanced talks with his agent to bring him to Turin.

On Saturday Arsenal also joined the race to sign him. In the past the English club almost signed Uruguayan goalkeepers Fabian Carini, and Sebastian Viera.

The other teams who have publicized their interest in the talented goalkeeper are Benfica and Genoa.

According to Muslera’s agent the player has already made up his mind on which club to join, but will not reveal who until the end of the week. All we know for now is that he will be transferred to a “big” European club.

Exclusive: Lazio To Sign Fernando Muslera

Lazio seem to have found a solution to their goal-keeping problems in Uruguay.

Goal.com has learnt from sources in Uruguay that Lazio are close to clinching a deal for Nacional Montevideo goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

The Biancoceleste have been looking aggressively for a goalkeeper after missing out on Juan Pablo Carrizo and Marco Amelia, and there have even been suggestions that Angelo Peruzzi could be lured out of retirement.

However, a solution seems to have been found in Uruguay with the Serie A kick-off around the corner.

The fact that former striker Daniel Fonseca is Muslera's agent has helped, and Lazio and Nacional are close to agreeing a fee.
Muslera, 1.90 metres tall, is one of the most promising goalkeepers to come out of South America in recent years and was being chased by the likes of Arsenal, Juventus and Inter Milan.

At 21, he has already cemented a starting role for his club, and is touted as Fabian Carini's successor in the Uruguayan national team.

Lazio eye 'new Buffon’

Lazio are set to sign Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Musiera as the Juan Pablo Carrizo deal continues to stall.

The Biancocelesti are searching for a replacement for Angelo Peruzzi after the veteran retired at the end of last season.

It seemed that Lazio President Claudio Lotito had his man when he agreed a £5m move for River Plate’s highly-rated Argentine custodian Carrizo.

However, there have been complications in the 'keeper's efforts to gain Italian citizenship and it now looks likely that a new option will be sought to take the pressure off 43-year-old Marco Ballotta.

The capital club have the option to delay payment for Carrizo or may opt to loan him out, with La Liga side Real Zaragoza reportedly interested.

Musiera is seen as one of South America’s top shot stoppers and has been linked to Arsenal and Inter, but Lazio are believed to be in talks with middleman Tiberio Caballeri in Rome.

“Lazio are set to sign the new Gigi Buffon,” Caballeri told TV show Quelli che hanno portato il calcio a Roma.

“He’s a 'keeper with an amazing physique and already such experience that belies his age. Last year he played in every Coppa Libertadores game on hostile grounds and showed his character and athleticism.”

It had initially appeared that Carrizo had replaced Musiera in the Aquile’s affections as the Nacional man is just 21-years-old and seen to be inexperienced, but it now emerges that Musiera had his own beaurocratic difficulties.

”Lazio have been interested in him since June, but there were problems regarding his passport,” Caballeri explained.

“Those issues sorted themselves out a month ago and Lazio can now beat Inter and Arsenal to his signature.”
