I posted the ones for USA and Britain afew days ago in the funny pics thread, but as I just got the full set for other countries, I think we could understand the reasons for calling countries with these names.

It maybe fun.

Let's try. I'll try to ask for things that I don't get...

The maps that say "Europe according to USA, Britain, etc". Instead of the nation names, the map consists of funny stereotypes that come from whichever nation the map is "according to".

Here is Europe according to USA...

Why is Ireland called St. Patrick?
    Iceland Wikileaks?
    Britain Mummy?
    Scandinavians Socialist Union?
    Apfelkuchen?
    Former Yuguslavia Resident Evil?
    Dracula?
Germany: Dirty porn: Are they known for that?

    Does anybody know?

    Exactly.

Here are the maps. I started with the one according to USA. I'm trying to understand the steroetypes. There are so many maps to many countries, so I thought it would make a good discussion.

Germany has one of the largest porn industries outside of the US, and they tend to be a bit more out-of-order than the US brand. Also, they tend to have more muslims in the movies, or at least Turks.

St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, or at least "got all the snakes out of Ireland."

England is America's mom, hence, "mummy."

Dracula is from Romania, a region known as Transelvania, the only reason Americans would know of the region.

Judging by his opening post, he wants to put them all in the same thread and continue adding as he comes across new maps.

In addition to this gathering of "according to" maps, we could all discuss the various stereotypes and consider their meanings and/or originations. This would help everyone "get the joke".

At least, that's what I gathered. I could be mistaken.

Trouble is that this map would look very different depending on where in the USA. In a place like Texas, Russia is "Commies". In a place where I live, it's like, "The Motherland".

    Nice.

    So, we're stuck with those:

    Iceland Wikileaks?
    Scandinavians Socialist Union?

    :agree:

    In case people were wondering...
Spain is Mexico because that's where Mexicans come from. And Italy is the home of Al Pacino and he was in the Godfather.

Iceland Wikileaks? Most Americans assume Iceland is either off the coast of Sweden or Sweden itself.

Scandinavians Socialist Union? All those countries are socialist, supposedly.

It's not just the Russians in town. It's also the guys in Berkeley who are card-carrying commies. It's the people in Chinatown with their red books who see Russia as the enemy. It's all the Latinos in the Mission who see Spain as "Continental Aggressor" rather than as "Mexico".

I'm not convinced with the first justification to be honest.

That is because USA has people from totally different backgrounds.
