Those deep defending sides you need to have more players running behind the lines. Leao is wrong choice and tbh his end product isn't anything special. Same goes to all POR players on that match. There wasn't anybody else beside Ronaldo doing some runs and on the final 3rd you didn't have many options to play the ball and when they did, that last ball was total garbage. If i was Roberto Martinez, i'd start Jota on the left, CR in the middle and Silva on the RW. Jota is sneaky player with the ability to play in the box as well.

Georgia was pretty damn good. Interesting to see them against Czechs.
Portugal's lineup was so overloaded with wingers that they played Cancelo as a CM. Stupid.

With so many legs in the box, I can't believe Martinez waited for the 89th minute to make an adjustment for that.

I wouldn't slight Leão so much other than he needed someone besides the occasional Ronaldo to do runs. Jota can (and was the sub I picked for a carded Leão). But also Gonçalo Ramos.

The Ronaldo dick munchers coming out of their holes :baus:
He was actually one of their more useful players in the final third save for being offsides more than Moise Kean.

Well most of the old school portugese coaches are so backwards in their ways, mind you half of them are now coaching in Saudi now, who are they really left with? It's probably too early in Amorim's career to take an international job, they tried the Brazilian route with Scolari. Seems to me the Portugese FA wanted something modern which would allow their attacking talents to flourish and Martinez was their only option.
There once was a time I looked forward to Mourinho taking a stint as the NT coach later in his career. Now I want none of that.

These guys wouldnt last a second in this social media day and age, but that could also be good news for the england team, maybe their heads are more into it now

What's funny is that everything those players were guilty of are things typical English tourists did in the alley behind my old apartment in Lisbon.

Have you seen those visual comparisons with him and Ronaldo? Rooney is a year younger and looks like his dad now. Ronaldo getting plenty of child blood on the Saudi black market and all.

Roberto Martinez is a football terrorist. Bernardo Silva playing 90 min of that game is criminal. A dialogue needs to be started about players outside of Pep's system. These system players look useless when asked to think and play for their countries.
Bernardo Silva was really poor. Worst is when he thinks he can shoot at goal. I wouldn't have kept him on longer than 65'.

He's such a poor manager.

Belgium's peak was 2018 and I don't know if they had it in them to beat France. But I feel like with another manager we might have a chance. Mousa Dembele was eaten alive by Pogba that game and I still think Nainggolan would have been a much tougher opponent, but Martinez didn't select him because of personal problems between them. And knowing Martinez, it was probably just the fact Nainggolan saw right through his bullshit.

Today I see this guy mismanaging Portugal, a squad riddled with talent. In the same ugly beefed up suits. The same ugly beefed up tie. The same ugly bald head glimmering. The same ridiculous post game interviews. The same phrases that contain so many words but so little meaning.

I hate this guy to the core. He represents everything that is wrong in not just football, but the world of business. He sells air.

Fuck him.

He’ll make a great national team coach. International football is the opposite of modern club football. You just don’t have the time to drill in systems and rely a lot on players individual qualities. Plus it’s a vacation job anyways.
Regular season definitely not. But international tournaments where you have several weeks / a month for prep - Conte's Italy 2016 is proof that its possible to drill movements and solutions, that team worked like clockwork and played like its a club team.

Hey so if Croatia lose or draw this match, does this mean a draw against Spain guarantees Italy progression to the next round you reckon?
As it currently stands I think if Italy lose tomorrow then Spain need to beat/draw against Albania next week in order to secure progression.

If Italy and Spain draw tomorrow, they're both guaranteed to qualify.

A draw between Croatia and Albania would have made things more interesting I think.

You can clearly see Albania's inexperience.
I don't like how deep they sit in defence. They did the same thing against Italy. But on this level, if you're going to allow a team to just have the ball right around the box, you will concede at some point.
