The commentator knows shit about football though. He kept praising De Jong for example, who let every russian break through the midfield so easily.
Yeah, I guess he said that because De Jong made some crucial interventions on ready-made goals which, tactically should not be his role.

Guys like Engelaar, Van Bronckhorst and Boulahrouz had the matches of their lives in the group stage, making the defensive compartiment looking decent. Unfortunately for Oranje, this 1/4 final showed the weakness of the Dutch a bit too much. I still can't believe how the Russians failed to seal the match in regular time.

Since everyone's praising Arshavin and Hiddink to no end (and they deserve it) I'm gonna take another route and show some love for Pavlyuchenko. He was fantastic today. Scored a goal, hit the bar, was a willing runner and just never stopped. Well done lad.
Pavlyuchenko had a very good match. His finish for arguably the most important goal of the match was perfect. But his play towards the wings added nothing. His crosses to his teammates weren't there. And his main value was front and center.

Unfortunately, I could not say that about him for all the wasted, squandered, and blown chances I've seen him take in the previous couple of matches. He is one of the main reasons why I think watching Russia can be so frustrating.

I am proud to be a Russian citizen. The rest of you are just glory hunters. :D
:p

Hey, I'll have you know I was wearing my Lokomotiv jersey during the match. :D (Hey -- game winner from Torbinsky.)

I'm somewhere in the middle because i was a Russian fan during the match :D
Well, my gloryhunting is just a few days old then. ;) I've been a fan since I saw them eliminate Greece 1-0 in a match they rightfully should have destroyed them 7-0.

Exactly. Which is why he's about as useful on the wings as Trezeguet is. Why he decided or was directed by Hiddink to go out there on the wing as often as he did was bewildering. He did nothing to help his team out there.

I guess proabably cause the Dutch fullbacks were pushing a lot more forward to get the equaliser(s), so he went to the vacant areas there...he did strike a wicked shot that went off the post, dribbling on the left wing a la Del Piero

Good point about that shot. It was nicely taken, even though I disagree with the announcers -- Van der Sar wasn't beaten and nicely played his position for it with just enough time and space to reach up to the post if necessary.

can't blame VDS at all, he gave one of the better GK performances I have seen for quite a while...saved 3-4 certain goals...if he had the Dutch defence of yesteryears, things could have been very different

I was just in the city and its still orange. What an ugly colour that is.
But it doesn't matter, I screamed Arshavin a few times and the Dutch where silent.
Then some guy started saying that Croatia has lost too.
I replied, yes, but not with 1-3 and eventually being the weaker side

Okk first off all ,congrats too all the russia fans here, the team deserved to beat my country, i admit it ,holland played like shit, but don't overreact like Russia is now world class because without Hiddink ,they wouldnt even be at the EC, This guy is the best coach the dutch ever produced and i wish he was our coach instead of vBasten,I feel sorry for VD Sar because he was saving our asses many times. And Russia too play the best and most fun football to watch? I'm sorry but mosty of all they defended with 8 people in front of the goal and we all(i hope most of you guys do) know that if a team doesnt try to play football the dutch can't create a single chance. Now i will be cheering for the Azurri again who are thru thx to Holland ,the team with the best player but with a coach who was affraid to take some risks in this match, Again i want to congratulate the Russians for theyre well deserved victory,Shame for Vd Sar,who was without a doubt the best keeper in this tournament.

I found this post-match quote from VDS quite interesting:

http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=reu-eurodutchvandersar&prov=reuters&type=lgns

“In extra time I really had the idea that we could go through if we managed to get into the penalty shootout.”
I had that feeling too. That if Russia went to a penalty shootout, they'd be disadvantaged by the better finish of the Dutch and the more experienced shot stopper.

But Hiddink perhaps may have known a little of that too. They continued to play defense through an aggressive offense. Even up 2-1, they continued to attack rather than fall back and defend.

In some ways the result could reflect two different attitudes for the match. Russia wanted to win. The Dutch were hoping to squeak through in a penalty shootout.

a huge amount of credit must go the Goose...no1 knows Holland better than him, and the gameplan the Russians used was absolutely perfect...denied the Dutch the ball...target the slowish defence and smother Sniejder (according to me atleast)...really schooled Van Basten in this encounter

I'm really curious to see how Italy's defense will handle Villa and Torres. I fear they'll be a bit too slow. God... who would've believed Italy would rely on Panucci as a CB in 2008?? Will Toni finally score?

Anyway, all group winners have been eliminated so far, Spain to follow?
